Keeping My Home Decor Fresh

September 18, 2014 by Aliesha

Choosing the right furniture for your home can be a big decision! Many of us want to keep our home “on trend,” but how is the best way to do that?

My advice is to buy classic pieces of furniture that you absolutely love (my blue couch is one, and my headboard is another!). I can easily toss on some new pillows or a new duvet cover to keep my living room and bedroom looking fresh and on-trend.

Here are the main factors I keep in mind when selecting new furniture for my home.

1) Scale

Scale is so important! You don’t want small furniture to be dwarfed in a huge room, and you also do not want large pieces to overwhelm a small space. One thing I’ve realized in owning a large historic home is that big houses need big accessories (including furniture)! With high ceilings and huge rooms, I have selected large pieces of furniture, such as a long couch and a big dining room table.

2) Style

What is the style of your home? How does your personal style play into how you “dress” your home? Our home has a very traditional feel, with wide baseboards, crown molding, chair rails, and vintage wallpaper. Because of this, we’ve chosen more traditional furniture for most of the rooms to reflect our home’s style. I like to have fun keeping my home on-trend with accent pieces, pillows, accessories, throws, and art while maintaining our home’s traditional style with furniture that has clean, classic lines. If you’re not sure what your “style” is, visit some retail stores such as Havertys and notice what catches your eye.

3) Sticker (Price)

Set a budget for your new piece of furniture, then shop around to find the perfect piece for your home at the price you want! We always try to stay under our set budget for furniture, even if it means waiting a little longer to get what we really want! Keep in mind that classic pieces of furniture are worth investing more in since you’ll keep them a long time!

Here are a few great ways to keep your home on-trend and fresh:

-Purchase a great bookshelf or display cabinet, then style it according to the seasons or current trends (by adding books, art, plants, etc.)

-Purchase a sofa that can be easily slip-covered so you can freshen it up with a whole new look

-Purchase floor samples of furniture, as these are often sold at greatly reduced rates

-Bring in new lamps, rugs, and mirrors to enliven a space (even if it means “stealing” them from another room in the house!)

-Follow Havertys on Pinterest for fresh, creative ideas for your home

-Paint the room a fresh new color

Get the Look for Less with Moxie Jean

September 11, 2014 by Aliesha

I love shopping for clothing for my kids, but I have two main limitations right now: 1) finances (I can’t spend tons of money on clothes for all three kids) and 2) time (it’s hard to find time to shop for clothes with or without all the kids in tow)!

I’m sure many of you experience these same limitations too!

That’s why I am glad I discovered Moxie Jean. It combines the convenience of online shopping with the prices of consignment stores to allow you to buy exactly the clothing you want for your kids!

All of the clothing from Moxie Jean is gently used (unless stated otherwise), but the condition is SUPERB. You’ll never see any stains, tears, or holes – EVER.

I love the turquoise jeans I found for Cordelia (Baby Gap) and the sweet little shirt (The Children’s Place). This is a perfect fall outfit, and she can wear both pieces separately too!

For Vera I found a sweet little corduroy dress (Cherokee) in lovely fall colors, as well as brown leggings (unknown brand). The dress really looks brand new!

Of course I had to snag some new digs for Mister Jude as well! I ordered his clothes a bit on the large side since he’s growing like a weed! The navy blue cords (Sonoma) look great with the plaid dress shirt (Baby Gap).

Vera was so excited when the box arrived! Here is a video of her unpacking it:

We had a fashion show and everyone was so happy with their new fall looks! (Everything pictured below was purchased for $35!)

If you are looking for a good place to shop for used children’s clothing conveniently from home, definitely check out Moxie Jean!

Oh, and one more thing I need to mention: You can sell your outgrown children’s clothing (excellent condition & nice brands) to Moxie Jean. Just request a free mailer with your order so you can ship items to them to sell! (They’ll buy approved items outright.)

7 Tips for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

August 14, 2014 by Aliesha

Tad was recently telling me about a sleep study that revealed that a good night’s sleep actually “cleans out” your brain and prepares it for the next day. That’s why we feel so terribly when we don’t sleep well!

Here are some helpful ideas for making sure you get the sleep your body needs!

7 Tips for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

1. Turn off the screens

Watching TV, browsing the internet, and staring at your phone or tablet can signal to your brain that it is daytime, so try and shut off your electronic devices an hour or so before bedtime in order to help your body’s clock to know it’s time for bed!

2. Dump your brain
If you frequently lie awake at night thinking about the next day’s to-do list, try and write it all down before you go to bed. Dump out all the things you have to do onto paper so you can sleep peacefully!

3. Avoid sugar and caffeine

These culprits can keep you staring at the ceiling long past when you had hoped to fall asleep. Try not to drink caffeine after dinner, and be cautious of eating sweet snacks (like ice cream) late in the evening.

4. Develop a bedtime ritual

Create a routine you follow every night before bed, such as taking a bath, reading, trading foot rubs with your spouse, or anything else that helps relax you. When you do these rituals (even brushing your teeth and changing into PJs), you will signal to your body to start getting ready to sleep.

5. Dim the lights

It is helpful to turn off the overhead lights and just use lamps in the late evening. This is yet another clue to your body that night has arrived!

6. Use lavender essential oil

Since before it was “cool,” I have been using lavender oil to help me sleep. Rub a few drops on your pillow and sheets to help lull you into dream land. You can also rub it on your feet or even add it to your laundry detergent when you launder your sheets. Lavender is safe to use with children as well.

7. Invest in a great mattress
When you climb into bed, you should feel that your bed is the most comfortable bed in the world! That’s how we feel every night, especially when we come home after traveling. If you don’t have a great mattress, you should definitely get one!

Havertys is hosting an amazing giveaway in conjunction with their Labor Day sale! The Grand Prize is a TEMPUR-pedic Mattress (Queen) Cloud Supreme Mattress Set – $2,699 RTV!!
