House Tour: Kitchen and Breakfast Nook

April 6, 2010 by Aliesha

Welcome to our first house tour! Since we can’t invite all of you over to come see our new house, I thought I’d post pictures every now and then so you can see how our house is looking! The first room we have “settled into” is the kitchen, so we’ll start here.
Bench below the windowsill (laundry is in kitchen, so this bench will come in handy for folding/sorting!)
Lots of pretty kitchen utensils/gadgets we were given as wedding presents
Fruit basket filled with Tad’s favorite: Granny Smith apples
The view from our kitchen into our breakfast nook
I love everything in this picture: shabby-chic table, white cake pedestal, green ramekin, white butter dish and little birdies salt & pepper shakers
Wreath my mom made us displayed in our breakfast nook
Coffee station in our breakfast nook
Love the sign (thanks, Angela!) and the pink dogwood (tree is outside the breakfast nook window)
Our sink (there is a fish living in the mason jar)
Green pears in a ceramic damask dish

Hope you enjoyed this little tour of our kitchen! I’ll continue to post pictures as we tackle more rooms and projects!

Weekend Update

April 5, 2010 by Aliesha

Thank you all for not giving up on reading this blog even though I didn’t post all weekend! When you hear about our weekend, I think you’ll understand!

Thursday
We woke up Thursday morning to discover a sink upstairs had overflowed all night and leaked through the floor to our first floor. (This was, of course, discovered 30 minutes before we had to leave for an OB/GYN appointment!) We cleaned up as much of the mess as we could and tried to turn of the water (which we were unable to do). That afternoon when we got home, we realized that in addition to the sink problem, there was a totally unrelated other problem. We had about 6 inches of standing water underneath our entire house due to an unknown leak. (This was, of course, discovered shortly after 5pm, when all the local plumbers had stopped working.) Tad was able to get ahold of a plumber who came out and turned our water (and electricity) off completely. He told him we needed to pump all the water out before he could do anything. So, around 7, we headed to Lowe’s (for the second time that day) to buy a pump. We got home just before 9pm and tried to get the pump installed (by flashlight, mind you, since our power was still out). About 9:20 or 9:30 Tad turned the power back on in hopes of getting the pump to start working, which he was not able to do right away. My family arrived from Virginia shortly after 9:30, and we greeted them with the news that we still did not have any water!

Friday
Tad, my dad, and my brothers worked under the house most of the day trying to pump out the water. My mom and I worked on house projects inside. Throughout the day, we did not have water (except for a brief period in the afternoon during which we filled up more jugs of water and washed a few dishes). There were also periods where we didn’t have power either! We still were able to get lots of things done, and we had a nice meal that evening. Later that evening, we got the water back on, so everyone was able to take a shower.Saturday
Mom and I started painting the nursery on Saturday and were able to get a coat of pretty paint on the walls. It’s looking great! Phillip and Tad worked on tilling a garden, and Nich and Dad continued to work on the leak under the house. They all helped with some other miscellaneous projects that we wanted to get done. It was such a blessing to have their help!!Sunday
Easter! We enjoyed getting to worship together at our church on Sunday morning. We had a nice meal together after church and then my family headed home. I crashed and took a 2-hour nap after they left! We had a simple dinner of popcorn and ice cream 🙂 that night.
House update: We have temporarily stopped the leak under the house until a plumber can come (tomorrow morning) to more permanently fix it. For another unknown reason, we still do not have power in about half the electrical outlets in our house. Tad is trying to fix this himself.

Whew! I think that pretty much sums up our weekend! We learned a lot and are thankful to the Lord for all of his help (especially in sending my family down this weekend when we most needed them)! We are continuing to trust Him as we fix the rest of these issues.
