Memorial Day Porch Party

May 27, 2015 by Aliesha

On Monday we decided to invite a few people over for a Memorial Day cookout on our porch!  We’d recently hung cafe lights and wanted to enjoy our outdoor space before it gets too hot this summer!  We carried all our tables and chairs outside for this, but maybe in the future Tad can build us another table to stay outside permanently!

The kids (eight total) enjoyed playing with the sand box, swinging, running laps around the house, playing croquet, and just being silly.

We ate burgers and all the fixings, as well as chips, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, pasta salad, watermelon, brownies, and strawberry ice cream.

My friends are just stunning.  For real!!  I’m so blessed by their love for the Lord and their encouragement in motherhood!

We really hope we’ll get to use our porch for more gatherings like this in the future!

Fall Hospitality (& How Vera Helps!)

November 5, 2014 by Aliesha

Something about fall just makes me want to show hospitality!

I love having people around my table, serving them warm food and talking while the candles burn down.

So many “fall dishes” are warm and comforting, and perfect for easy hospitality.  Beef stew, ham & potato chowder, lasagna, enchiladas… all of these are warm and delicious, yet simple.

Our new wall art is so special to us.  We sang this hymn at our wedding and at Tad’s ordination.  It’s a Lindsay Letters print we bought at Hobby Lobby.

Our calligraphy name art can be found at MiMi’s Soda Shoppe.

Vera has been so excited about showing hospitality when we’ve done it lately.

Here are some ways she helps:
-straightening up her room
-picking up books and toys in the living room
-setting the table (with a little help)
-greeting guests at the door
-serving dessert (she loves to carry plates in for people!)
-thanking our guests for coming

My best tip for showing hospitality… just INVITE them, and then figure everything else out!  I bet you’ll get that table cleaned off if you know they are coming.  😉

Hospitality Resources

July 5, 2013 by Aliesha

This post is part of my ongoing series on hospitality.

As my hospitality series draws to a close, I wanted to share some of my favorite resources with you if you’re interested in continuing to grow in practicing hospitality!  These are not in a particular order.

Favorite books:
–The Art of Hospitality by Yvonne G. Baker (practical, and filled with recipes and menu plans)
–Practicing Hospitality by Pat Ennis and Lisa Tatlock (biblical support for hospitality, plus recipes)
–A Handbook for Minister’s Wives by Dorothy Kelley Patterson (not all about hospitality, but that’s definitely a big part of the book)
–The Christian Homemaker’s Handbook edited by Pat Ennis and Dorothy Kelley Patterson (great book for any Christian woman; includes extensive sections on the home and meal planning)
–Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist (nothing will make you want to throw open the doors of your home quite like this book… truly inspirational, plus it includes some of my very favorite recipes)
–Homemade Memories by Marita Littauer (about creating family memories in your home, but includes many menu plans that are perfect for hospitality occasions)
–The Hospitality Commands by Alexander Strauch (thorough biblical support for WHY to show hospitality)
–Open Heart, Open Home by Karen Burton Mains (I haven’t read this one yet, but my mom recommends it)

Favorite blogs/posts:
–practical tips for practicing hospitality at Generation Cedar
–hospitality posts at Radical Womanhood
