Our Homeschooling Room

May 16, 2016 by Aliesha

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been sprucing up our family room (in the back of our house) to serve as a homeschooling room for us for the fall!  We’ll actually be starting our homeschool year in July, so I wanted to get things in order before then!

I’ll do another post about the curriculum we’re using, but it’s all been ordered and should be arriving this week!  It’s literature based, so we’ll be spending lots of time reading together on the couch.  That’s one of the many benefits of homeschooling… lots of snuggles on the couch while reading together as a family.  I can’t wait!

The layout of the room hasn’t changed, but I did add window treatments, pillows, a pin board, shelving, and some decorative touches.

This is Tad’s desk (personal, not his work-from-home desk, which is upstairs).  We use this computer for educational videos.

I made the plant hanger with some macrame cord leftover from another project.

This watercolor was painted by my late paternal grandmother.  I love it!

Here’s a simple tutorial for making a plant hanger.

This room had cornice boards on the windows, so I removed the drapes and added a new fabric.

DSC_6360copysm

I didn’t take pictures of the process, but it was very simple.  I just cut the fabric in half lengthwise and used iron-on hem tape to him the bottom and side edges.  I ironed the sides so it would have a nice crease at the corners. Then I pinned the fabric to the top of the cornice board using upholstery pins.  I saved a lot of money doing it this way, and I’m happy with how it turned out.  If you don’t have existing cornice boards, this tutorial could help you build some.

The fabric I used is by Waverly and I found it at Walmart, if that helps you track it down!

I also made a coordinating pillow using the leftover fabrics from the window treatments and the pin board.  It’s a simple envelope pillow (similar to this).  The yellow pillow cover is from here and I found the turquoise pillow at Target (dollar section).

I wanted to make a pin board so we could hang up our Scripture memory verses.

DSC_6409copysm

I used a large canvas and covered it with quilt batting (using a staple gun). Then I stretched fabric (Waverly, from Walmart also) around and stapled it as well.

DSC_6368copysm

The entire room isn’t dedicated to school.  We also have an elliptical, an ironing board, the vacuum, all our beach/pool stuff, mason jars, and a few other miscellaneous things on the other side of the room.

DSC_6420copysm

We installed simple shelving on two walls to house books and learning resources.  Like I said, we haven’t gotten our curriculum for this year yet, but some of it will go on these shelves.

DSC_6394copysm

To make the shelves, we just bought pine boards in the width we wanted.  At Lowe’s they’ll cut it to the exact length you need for free!  Very convenient.  We bought metal brackets and screws as well.  I measured and marked where to put the brackets, and Tad screwed them into the shelves.  We worked together to hang them on the wall.  It only took a couple of hours to hang all six shelves.  You could sand and paint them or even stain them if you wanted a different look!

DSC_6419copysm

The other set of shelves is above the new desk.  Vera will not be doing a ton of seat work, but she will need a place to practice her handwriting.

DSC_6387copysm

This set of shelves currently has a lot of school supplies, learning activities, paper, coloring books, and art supplies. We’ll do a big stock-up on school supplies when the sales start this summer.  I really love our new pencil sharpener!  And we’re all excited about this jumbo pack of crayons.

DSC_6395copysm

The bins on these shelves are from the Dollar Tree, the magazine holder (to hold paper and stickers) is from IKEA, the photo boxes are from Michael’s, and the turquoise tub is from Target (dollar section).

We got a new CD player from Walmart, and I know we’ll enjoy listening to music and stories during our day!

One of my friends is moving, so I bought this chair from her when she was having a yard sale.  I painted it turquoise!  (I took my curtain fabric to Lowe’s and had them color match a sample can of paint to it.)

DSC_6392copysm

Theodore was my little buddy while I took pictures of the room this morning!

DSC_6389copysm

I have a few other little places I put up art and pictures.  This is the little bit of wall next to the doorway to the kitchen.

DSC_6405copysm

I love this “Be Joyful” print from True Cotton (one of my favorite Etsy shops)!

I hope you enjoyed this little tour of our homeschooling room!  I look forward to sharing more about our curriculum choices soon.

If you homeschool, do you have a homeschooling room? Tell me about it!

Homemaking Help: Organization, Routines, Laundry, Cooking & More!

April 27, 2016 by Aliesha

HomemakingJustGotEasier

Every year I make a small investment in becoming a better homemaker.  We all know what it feels like to be discouraged about laundry piling up, kids clamoring for dinner when you don’t know what you’re making, and seemingly endless household chores.  We all know what it feels like to feel behind on life, and to long to “get on top of things.”

Each spring I purchase an amazing bundle of resources to help me in my homemaking.

Just like teachers continue to take classes to maintain their certification, so I want to continue to learn and grow as a homemaker!  Homemaking is my full-time job, so I want to excel at it!  Reading great eBooks, taking eCourses, and listening to audio files is just one way I get the motivation and encouragement I need to love my family well.

I want to take just a minute today to share with you about this year’s bundle, and encourage you to make the investment in your family by buying the 2016 Ultimate Homemaking Bundle!  (If you’ve purchased one in the past, know that this bundle is comprised of 95% new material!)

So here’s how it works.  For one week a year, a whole bunch of eBook authors and eCourse creators get together and offer their best products in an ULTIMATE bundle package. The value of the bundle is insane!  For what I would spend on just two or three of the high-quality eBooks included, I get an entire library with the best resources on homemaking, organization, real food, DIY ideas, marriage, parenting, and more.

Ultimate Homemaking Bundle 2016

The entire bundle is just $29.97 ($10 to upgrade from PDF files to eReader files for your Kindle or Nook).  It is worth every penny, let me tell ya!

There are many things included in this year’s bundle that I’m excited about, but let me just share a few today.

–31 Days to a Clutter-Free Life by Ruth Soukup (Yes… I need this one!)

–A Month of Good Enough for Company Meal Plans by Jessica Fisher (I love showing hospitality, so this is a must-have)

–Thinking Outside the Gift Box by Lauren Lanker (I love learning about creative new gift ideas!)

–The Dig for Kids: Proverbs by Patrick Schwenk (great study to do with the children)

–Cake Stand by Quinn Veon (the homemade cake recipes in this book look amazing!)

–Raising Kids You Actually Like by Sheila Wray Gregoire (the title made me laugh, but it looks great!)

–Kids Cook Real Food by Katie Kimball (recipes my kids can learn to make)

Seriously, those titles are just a drop in the bucket!  This bundle is awesome!
BonusValue

Like previous bundles, this year’s Ultimate Homemaking Bundle includes some AMAZING bonus offers, like Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products from Grove Collaborative, natural skin care products from Bloom Naturals, art prints from Hope Ink, a class from Craftsy, and so many others!  Just the bonus offers alone are valued at over $250, which brings the value of the bundle to around $1300!!

And if all of that isn’t enough, I also have an exciting EXCLUSIVE bonus offer for Feathers in Our Nest readers!  I designed a Homemaking Printable Collection (with watercolor florals & brush lettering) as a special thank-you gift to all readers who purchase the 2016 Ultimate Homemaking Bundle through my link.  You all are so sweet to support this blog & my family… this is the least I can do to say thank you!!Exclusive Bonus Offer for Feathers in Our Nest readers - FREE Homemaking Printable Collection

The collection includes a blank menu plan, a chore list, a grocery list, a beautiful Scripture printable, and MORE.  After the sale, the whole collection is going in my Etsy shop, so this is your chance to get it for free.

I know this post has gotten long (thank you for sticking with me), so let me summarize really quick.

That Time I Almost Hired a Housekeeper

January 12, 2016 by Aliesha

After Christmas, I was so overwhelmed with the state of our home I almost hired a housekeeper.

As I surveyed our living areas, all I could see were bits of wrapping paper, pine needles, candy wrappers, dozens of small stocking stuffers, books, crayons, socks, and so much more.

I felt defeated after cleaning the whole house soon after Christmas, because, despite all my effort (and Tad’s too!), the house remained dirty.  Sure, the kids rooms were back to order, our bedroom wasn’t a disaster, and the dining room table was cleared.  But the kitchen needed a deep clean, both bathrooms were still out of hand, and don’t get me started on the windows.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s ever come thisclose to hiring someone to help them clean!  No judgment from me!

All six of us are here in our home 98% of the time (Tad works from home and we homeschool), so Proverbs 14:4 most definitely applies to our family.  (“Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.”)  I don’t need someone to help me every day or even every week.  I just needed some help digging myself out of the chaos!

As it turned out, the cleaning lady couldn’t come that week, so I buckled down, grabbed my tote of Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning supplies, and got to work. (Again.)

We vacuumed and swept and wiped up spots and scrubbed and disinfected and dusted.  By New Year’s Day, the house was definitely presentable, and we were even able to keep it nice all week.

In the past, I’ve made a lot of homemade cleaners, but in this season of life, I keep reminding myself that I cannot do everything.  Right now, I’m totally happy with my Mrs. Meyer’s and Seventh Generation cleaning supplies, and I just have to give myself some grace on the days I don’t get much cleaning done.

I’ve chatted about ePantry here on the blog before, but I wanted to share with you a current special they have going on that I think you’ll be interested in!

First of all, ePantry is a service that ships natural cleaning supplies, toiletries, and other items for your home directly to you (think Amazon Subscribe and Save… but eco-friendly!).  You get to decide what you want shipped and how frequently.  You pick all the products and you can cancel at any time.

I’ll be honest… when I first started hearing people talk about ePantry I thought it was a bit overrated.  I figured I could just grab the products I needed at Target or on Amazon.  Turns out, most of the natural products (toiletries, etc.) I use can’t be bought on Amazon currently (or at least not for a great price).  And we all know that a “quick trip” into Target can sometimes often result in a $40 splurge at the dollar section (why do they have to put that right by the front door??). Who walks into Target and just buys cleaning supplies? No one, because cleaning supplies are boring, so we throw a few “fun” items in the cart to make ourselves feel better.  Another bonus of shopping with ePantry is it’s really easy to know exactly what you’ll be spending for the month on those necessary supplies, so if you’re sticking to a budget, you’ll know what to expect.

I’ve been a member of ePantry for 5 months, and I have to say, I’m never more inspired to clean than when my monthly box arrives!!

So here’s the current offer.

***This offer is now sold out, but you can get $10 off your first order here***

Spend $20, get a FREE Mrs. Meyer’s Cleaning Kit that includes:
-Mrs. Meyer’s Hand Soap (you pick the fragrance)
-Mrs. Meyer’s Dish Soap (you pick the fragrance)
-Grove Walnut Scrubber Sponges
-Grove Kitchen Towel
-Casabella Cleaning Caddymmcd_leadimage_v3

A little about these items

I love Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap (cranberry scent is mmmmm!!!). The dish soap is great too and comes in an easy-to-use bottle.  The Grove kitchen towels are my absolute favorite. They are so incredibly soft, absorbent, and thick! I haven’t tried the walnut sponges yet, but they should be arriving any day.  And of course you need a great caddy for carrying cleaning supplies from room to room!

As I mentioned, you’ll need to spend at least $20 in order to get this awesome freebie.  It’s totally worth it, since you’ll get around $58 worth of eco-friendly, natural products for just $20.  MMCD_shortlist

When you sign up with this link, you’ll be prompted to answer a few quick questions about your household (only takes a minute).  Then, they’ll automatically fill your cart (“pantry”) with some suggested items.  Don’t worry… you can change any of them.  (Just don’t remove any of your freebies!)

Here’s one way to get a big bang for your buck:

7c45c939-ae4b-45c0-9dd8-e3d89eab60b1

But that’s not the only option.  Here’s another:

-Mrs. Meyer’s Cleaning Kit ($37.74 value – FREE)
-Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Bar Soap ($4.49)
-method Antibac Bathroom Cleaner ($3.99)
-Mrs. Meyer’s Glass Cleaner ($5.19)
-Mrs. Meyer’s Multi-Surface Cleaner ($3.89)
-Seventh Generation Dish Soap ($3.89)

In this scenario, you would receive 10 natural cleaning products for $21.45 – only $2.15 per item!  (All of the above products are ones I use regularly and love. I especially like the Rosemary scent of the Mrs. Meyer’s Multi-Surface Cleaner.)

It’s really up to you to decide what products you need, will use, and just want to try!

To receive free shipping on your next order, make sure you select the free 60 day VIP Trial after you check out.

And there’s no catch.

While, yes, this is a subscription service, you can cancel after your first order ships and never get another box from ePantry again. (But that would be sad.)  So take advantage of this incredible offer knowing that you’re not locked into anything permanent!

Currently ePantry does not ship to Canada, Hawaii, or Alaska.

But it’s more than just cleaning supplies!

While housecleaning has been the main topic of this post, ePantry has SO much more than just cleaning products!  In the last few months, I’ve bought eye cream, toothpaste, candles (the Grove Collaborative soy candles are the best), Argan oil, vitamins, and even coffee from them!  They also have diapers, toilet paper, feminine supplies, laundry detergent, and more.  You can compare prices with what you’re used to paying and see if things are a good deal for you!

I should mention too that the customer service at ePantry is awesome.  They are so helpful, and I’ve found the best way to contact them is through the chat box on the website!

For existing customers too…

If you’re already an ePantry customer (yay!), you can also get a sweet deal. You can have the Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning kit for 50% off by clicking here.

meyers_productspread_flat_600

As I mentioned earlier in this post, I am learning that I really can’t “do it all” right now. (Where did that myth of “doing it all” even come from??)  I can’t make all my own natural cleaning products while cooking 21 meals a week from scratch while taking care of 4 kids while being a supportive wife while blogging while serving at my church while maintaining friendships.  So when I have the chance to use systems that will help save me time and money, I jump on board!  ePantry is a blessing in this season… keeping me both stocked up on cleaning supplies and natural toiletries, AND motivated to clean!

This awesome ePantry offer ends Sunday, January 17th, 6pm PST (or when 3,000 kits have been sold).  Grab your free cleaning kit now!

***This offer is now sold out, but you can get $10 off your first order here***
