Breakfast Training

October 24, 2016 by Aliesha

Kitchen Training

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been training the girls in making breakfast in the mornings.  They take turns being the breakfast helper, and when it’s their turn, they’re learning to make scrambled eggs and oatmeal.  There are a lot of steps involved in the process (cracking eggs, pouring milk, etc.), and since they’re working at the stove, they still need a lot of oversight.  But we’re hoping that all this training will pay off eventually and they’ll be able to fix breakfast on their own!

One other thing I’m doing right now is taking my girls through a free mini-course from Kitchen Stewardship.  It’s a knife skills course for all ages of children, and it’s fantastic!  Obviously, it teaches knife safety to the kids, but as I’ve watched it, I’ve found that even I learned a few things (and learned some really good ways of explaining cutting techniques to the kids)!

I thought some of you might enjoy watching these videos with your kids as well.  There is SO much good information packed into these videos!  If you’re training your kids in the kitchen at all, this mini course is a must-watch.

The knife skills mini course is available to watch for free now through November 2.  And in the interest of full disclosure, this mini course is part of a larger Kids Cook Real Food eCourse available for purchase from Kitchen Stewardship (and for which I’m an affiliate).  That course will be available to buy on October 27. Whether you choose to upgrade to the full course or not, you can still watch the knife skills mini course for FREE!

Where are you with your kids & cooking?  Are they still too young to be helping?  Do they already know how to make some things?  Do tell!

Creating a Cozy Home in the Fall

October 11, 2016 by Aliesha

How to Make Your Home Cozy for Fall! | Feathers in Our NestIt’s no secret that I adore fall.  I love the weather.  I love the pumpkins.  I love the warm & delicious flavors. I love the sweaters & boots.  I love it all!

Today I’ll be sharing several tips for creating a cozy home in the fall!  These tips are to help you (in whatever season of life you’re in!) make your home a cozy, welcoming place, not just for yourself and your own family, but for the people whom you invite into your home.  Fall is a great time to show hospitality!

Add texture

I love to bring in lots of throw pillows and warm blankets, especially ones with interesting textures or pretty fringe.  This layered look brings warmth to your home!  Not to mention, that throw will come in handy on crisp mornings!

Add pumpkins

Well, this one is a given.  Add pumpkins and your home will instantly feel more “fallified” and cozy!  I don’t use orange pumpkins in my home anymore, since they don’t jive with my regular decor, so I have been collecting white, blue, tan, and burlap pumpkins over the past couple of years. You can always paint orange ones!

This little burlap pumpkin was just $1 at the Dollar Tree.

(Shameless plug) Adding a seasonal art print can instantly update your home and help celebrate the change of seasons!  This one is available in my Instagram shop.

We eat seasonally as much as possible, meaning we fully enjoy the delicious flavors that each season offers!  Right now we’re all about apples and pumpkin.  I’ve baked lots of (healthy) pumpkin muffins, peanut butter granola, apple oven pancakes, whole wheat bread, and more.  I’ve also started cooking soup again!  I made a totally yummy broccoli cheddar soup over the weekend.

Diffusing essential oils not only adds ambiance and a good fragrance to your home, but it also is one of the best ways to enjoy the benefits of essential oils.  I’ve been diffusing Blossoms lately, and I love it!

Select some fall books

There’s nothing cozier than settling down to a read good book (or three)!  If you have kids, pick up some fall library books.  This is one of our absolute favorites, but I’ll try to do a post soon with some other new favorites!  Don’t forget to grab something for you to read too.  I’m not much of a fiction reader, but I just started reading this one!

I normally drink decaf coffee, but I made an exception to try this Apple Cider Donut coffee from Archer Farms (Target).  It’s SO good!  Give it a try if you see it at your local Target!

So you’ve layered on the throw pillows, brewed a pot of coffee, and decorated with pretty pumpkins.  You have something yummy baking in the oven and your diffuser is going with a sweet-smelling blend.  Now all that’s left to do is turn on some music (I’m loving this album) and invite a few friends over!

New Kitchen Backsplash

September 28, 2016 by Aliesha

This summer I decided to do a little “upgrade” of our backsplash in the kitchen!

I’ve been wanting to tile it forever, but I decided to do this low-budget solution instead of waiting for who-knows-how-long for real tile.  I’m really happy with how it looks!

DIY White Faux Tile Kitchen Backsplash | Feathers in Our Nest

I used thermoplastic panels that look like glossy white tiles.  (Exact product)  I was able to cut the panels with kitchen shears and a utility knife (around outlet/light switch holes)  I glued them up with this, and everything has stayed where it should!

It took me two afternoon naptimes to complete this project.  I think it was time well spent!

We love how it transforms the kitchen!  Yay for inexpensive upgrades like this!
