Natural Living Baby Steps

January 5, 2015 by Aliesha

When we first started making big changes in our diet so that we were eating real food (whole grains, avoiding processed foods, etc.), I remember opening up our little bathroom cabinet and thinking that we still had a loooong way to go in terms of natural living products for our skin!

I have realized that (over time!) we have come a long way in that direction, so I thought I’d share some of our favorite natural health and beauty products!

Toothpaste
Tad still uses Crest and loves it (and says I can’t ever take it away…haha), but I use Earthpaste (Wintergreen is my favorite flavor) and the kids use Toms of Maine Kids.

Cleanser
I oil cleanse my skin with jojoba oil (I buy it at Trader Joe’s) and I don’t use any cleanser, toner, or commercial moisturizer.  If my skin is feeling a little dry (during the winter months), I use frankincense oil diluted in jojoba oil.

Eye Makeup Remover
I use fractionated coconut oil to remove eye makeup at night.  Put it on a cotton ball, then swipe clean!  (You can totally use normal coconut oil too! I just like FCO because it is always liquid, unlike normal coconut oil which hardens when it’s colder.)

Acne Treatment
I use melaleuca oil and frankincense oil for facial blemishes.  Melaleuca works unbelievably well for clearing up blemishes! Frankincense clears up old acne scars and current red spots.

Shaving (Tad)
Tad uses a safety razor to shave with now. For his pre-shave oil, he uses a mixture of olive oil and castor oil.  He uses Burt’s Bees soap for shaving “cream.”  After shaving, he uses a homemade lotion I made with shea butter and coconut oil.  (Similar to this recipe.)

Soap/Body Wash
We use homemade soap in the shower. Tad uses cedarwood charcoal soap and I use lavender chamomile oatmeal goat’s milk soap (I shave my legs with this soap as well).  The kids use Burt’s Bees body wash/shampoo.

Shampoo
I use Acure Organics Shampoo and Conditioner from Vitacost (use this link to save $10 on your first order… I’ll get $10 too).  I wait until it goes on sale, then I place an order with Vitacost that is large enough to score free shipping.

Lotion
I made a thick lotion that is great for dry skin.  I use that at night on my hands.  I also love the Bee Silk hard lotion bars from Made On, as well as the Bee Silk Jr. and the Bee Silk stick!

Lip Balm
I like Made On for this product as well!  My favorite is the vanilla dust lip balm, but I like the peppermint too.

Makeup
I am a new convert to Root, a small makeup company that sells 100% natural mineral makeup.  I use the pretty booster, the undereye brightener, the pearl powder (mix of 1 and 3), the pretty blender, the kabuki brush, the light bronze powder, the original bronze powder, the brow powder, the setting silk, the eyeshadow in tan rose, the mascara in black, and the tinted lip balms in gossip (my favorite) and doll.  I bought my “collection” over time using sales and coupon codes (watch their social media pages for those).  I love supporting such a great company.

Do you have any natural body/skin care products that you love? Please share!

Disclosure: Some of these links are affiliate links. If you make a purchase through my links, it will help support my family and this blog. Thank you! My opinions are 100% my own, and none of these companies paid me to mention their products. I only share what I personally use and love!

Making Healthy Choices for the New Year

December 29, 2014 by Aliesha

***FLASH SALE OVER***

You may recall back in September when I shared about the Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle.  Many of you purchased the bundle during the sale (thank you!), and I was so excited to see how enthusiastic you were about making healthy choices for yourself and your family!  I’ve really enjoyed the bundle myself, and I am THRILLED to tell you that Ryan, Stephanie, and Erin have brought the bundle back for a 2-day flash sale!

Since I got the bundle last fall, I’ve read 21+ of the eBooks and taken 2 of the eCourses (my favorite was the Vintage Remedies Essential Oils course!).  I redeemed all the bonus offers and loved every single one of them!  I’m continuing to read the rest of the eBooks at my own pace, referencing them whenever I want!

Have you started to think about your resolutions for the New Year?  Maybe to exercise, to eat healthier, to cook from scratch more, to learn a new skill … WELL, this bundle will help you with all of those resolutions and more!  Rather than just trying to do it on your own, why not invest in a library of resources and eCourses to help you on your journey towards a healthier YOU?

(Before you stop reading because you don’t consider yourself to be a “crunchy/granola” sort of person, scroll down and read the section I wrote just for you!)

It is so easy to feel overwhelmed and intimidated by all of the healthy living advice out there – to the point where we feel paralyzed and don’t do anything!

That’s where The Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle comes in. For the ridiculously low price of just $29.97 (for the PDF version) or $39.97 (for the eReader version), you can get access to a carefully curated collection of eBooks and eCourses with a total combined value of $1,140.

This is something I completely believe is worth your money and time, or I wouldn’t be sharing about it with you!  Like I mentioned, I’ve found this bundle to be invaluable in my own life!  I’ve tried new recipes, I made countertop yogurt, I learned a TON about essential oils, I’ve started making my own health and beauty products, I’ve made homemade natural cleaners, and I’ve gotten a better handle on meal planning… all thanks to the resources in this bundle!

The Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle will only be on sale for 2 days – from 12am EST on Monday, December 29 until 11:59pm EST on Tuesday, December 30.

You won’t want to wait – this flash sale only lasts 48 hours, and when it’s over, it’s over!  Maybe you missed it last time… don’t let it happen again!

You can buy with confidence because your purchase is covered by the Ultimate Bundles one-year guarantee: you have a full year to enjoy all the books and courses in the bundle, and if you don’t feel like it’s made a huge difference to your family’s health, you’ll get your money back in full!

It’s okay!  It is tempting to look at this bundle and think, “I could never read all of these books!” But the good thing is, you don’t have to.  You can just read the ones that pertain to you and your situation… at your own pace!

The bundle contains a wealth of information from the very finest healthy living writers out there – but there’s no point in feeling overwhelmed! A useful Getting Started Guide is included with your purchase, which will help you identify the most valuable resources for your specific health priorities.  (Eczema? Gluten intolerance? Diastasis Recti? Allergies? Gotcha covered!)

The Ultimate Bundles team has done all the hard work for you – finding the top experts across a number of healthy living fields and combining their products into one essential collection. If you want to take control of your health in the New Year, there’s no better place to start!

The way you should view the bundle is not a stack of books that you have to read, but as a library that you can access at any time from this point forward!  Like I mentioned above, you can read the books that you’re interested right now, and “check out” the others at a point in the future!  (That’s totally what I’ve done!)

If you don’t have an eBook reader, that’s okay!  When you purchase a PDF bundle, you will be able to read your eBooks directly on your computer!  I think this is especially helpful for printing out recipes, charts, and other resources.  Plus, if you do get an eBook reader in the future, you can easily transfer the eBooks to your reader then, since you’ll keep the files forever!

First of all, if you’re more of the kind of person who buys bread at the store, uses disposable diapers, cleans with bleach, and has no intention of raising backyard chickens, thank you for reading this blog.  I’m sure my “crunchy” tendencies are amusing to you at times!

BUT, you can still benefit from this bundle!  There are books on fitness, decluttering, cleaning, picky eaters, cooking, meal planning, freezer cooking, holidays, delicious recipes, and more!  There is also a bonus course about grocery savings, an online yoga membership, and two skin care gift set bonuses!

The point is, I definitely think there is something for everyone in this bundle, even if you aren’t “into” using essential oils, making homemade soap, or eating lots of kale.

Want to know exactly what’s included in the bundle?
Take a look through the categories, as well as the full list of eBooks and eCourses.

This bundle includes so many varied topics, so you’ll definitely find resources that are helpful to you!  And don’t forget… the Getting Started Guide will show you exactly which resources cover the topics and health concerns that matter most to you!

Handmade Lip Balm

December 27, 2014 by Aliesha

homemade-lip-balm

I ordered a slew of empty lip balm tubes back in the fall, hoping I would have a chance to make some homemade lip balm before Christmas. Time slipped away, so I just got around to doing it yesterday morning!  I wish I had known just how easy and fast it was (less than 15 minutes while the kids were all awake), because I probably could have made some lip balms to give away as Christmas gifts!  There’s always next year, right?  Ooooh… or Valentine’s Day!

This lip balm is so soft and soothing to dry lips. My girls love using it, and because it is made with safe, natural ingredients, I feel totally comfortable with them using it as often as they like!

The batch I made yesterday is plain; I didn’t add any essential oils to it.  But it would be lovely with spearmint (great for kids), vanilla, or peppermint essential oil!

Here is my recipe for homemade lip balm!

Handmade Lip Balm

Print
Easy DIY handmade lip balms are soothing to your dry winter lips, and they make wonderful little gifts!
Author: Aliesha @ Feathers in Our Nest
Recipe type: Health and Beauty
Cuisine: n/a
Ingredients
  • 2 Tbsp. beeswax pellets
  • 2 Tbsp. unrefined shea butter
  • 2 Tbsp. coconut oil
  • (optional) 5 drops essential oil (i.e. spearmint, peppermint, etc.)
  • 12 empty lip balm tubes
Instructions
  1. Prepare lip balm tubes by removing caps and grouping them in a tight bunch with a rubber band.
  2. Set a mason jar in a pot of water on the stove, and heat the water over medium heat.
  3. Put the beeswax pellets in the mason jar and melt.
  4. Add the shea butter and the coconut oil, stirring until melted as well.
  5. Quickly transfer the mixture to a glass measuring cup.
  6. Carefully pour the mixture into each tube, filling each tube as full as possible.
  7. When all the tubes are full, go back and "top off" each of them.
  8. Let cool, then wipe down the sides of the tubes to clean up any drips.
  9. Enjoy!
