Spring Planting

April 16, 2019 by Aliesha

I don’t know what it is about spring, but it makes me want to dig in the dirt and plant beautiful things! We visited our local plant nursery last weekend, and we discovered a whole world of green things to love!

Annuals, perennials… gorgeous and unique house plants, and stunning additions to any garden… plants from all over the world, and tons of vegetables and herbs. We were amazed at all of the options!

I am slowly collecting more houseplants, so I snagged a few lovely additions, and I couldn’t be happier with them! They bring so much life to our living spaces!

I’ve always loved succulents, so a few of those followed me home, naturally.

The main purpose of our trip was to purchase summer vegetables and herbs, and we probably doubled the amount we purchased last year. We just couldn’t resist all the unique varieties of tiny tomatoes and fragrant herbs!

Yesterday afternoon, we potted some of our plants on the porch. We have found that container gardening is what works best for us in this season, since we can easily slip outside to water our plants, and if there’s harsh weather, we can move the plants underneath an overhanging so they will survive the deluge.

The kids take such an interest in our little garden. It’s sweet to see them lovingly patting the dirt around their little plant babies.

Others are less enthused and enjoy playing in the sand box instead.

We need to pick up a few more planters (we love these inexpensive plastic pots) since we are greatly increasing our little garden this year, but we’re already quite excited to watch everything grow!

Do you have a garden(of any size)? Starting with a little pot of a favorite herb is an excellent way to begin!

Herbs

June 7, 2011 by Aliesha

Let’s face it: I’m a terrible gardener!  I wish I could grow an amazing garden each summer, but I’m just waiting for “the right year” haha.

I at least wanted to be able to have fresh herbs this year, so I grabbed some basil, oregano, and cilantro (my three favorites).  They are on our back porch where they get plenty of sunlight (they need 8 hours of sunlight a day, which they just wouldn’t get in my kitchen).  I occasionally remember to water them, and we’ve already enjoyed harvesting some of each of them for various culinary purposes!

Fresh Greens from Our Garden and Why I Use a Salad Spinner

May 18, 2010 by Aliesha

Today I harvested some salad greens from our garden! Very exciting.

I also wanted to share a kitchen tip with you. I highly recommend using a salad spinner, and I’ll share why. First, I’ll tell you that I don’t stock up on tons of kitchen gadgets that I don’t use regularly. I didn’t really think I needed a salad spinner, but Tad wanted to get one (thanks, Alton Brown), and we found one on sale for $3 at Wal-mart. I started using it and noticed a big difference!

When you spin your salad greens after washing them, they stay fresh longer. I love salad, and when I make a salad I usually make enough for another meal as well. When you take a minute to spin your greens, they will last longer in the fridge and not get “wilty and brown! Linked to:
