Unto the Lord

June 27, 2014 by Aliesha

As I was preparing for our ladies Bible study a couple of weeks ago, I read Colossians 3:23-24, which says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (ESV).

I’ve read this verse many of times (as you probably have too), but it struck me differently this time.  (Isn’t it amazing how God’s Word is “living and active”?)

I think I always thought about it from the perspective of not accepting the praise that men offer you for your work, but looking to God to reward you.  As in, people will cheer you on and appreciate you when you serve, but make sure you’re focused on giving God the glory instead of receiving it yourself.

When I read it this time, though, I realized that, while turning praise back to God is important, this verse is also talking about the unseen service.  The acts of service and love that we do that are completely unseen by men, but which matter to God.  I also thought about how little our culture values motherhood and homemaking.

It’s easy for me to serve and work hard in “public” ways – being involved in campus ministry in college, serving at a summer camp in high school and college, leading a community ladies Bible study now – because in those arenas, men (people) did/do appreciate my work.

“Whatever you do” – making coffee, making the beds, doing laundry, watering plants, serving breakfast, grocery shopping, endless sweeping, wiping bottoms, kissing boo-boos – is service to God.  We can view our work as worship to God when we do it from a heart that is focused on serving Him and bringing Him glory.

The phrase “work heartily” is a great reminder to be diligent, faithful, and not lazy. When I am busy at home, I do feel fulfilled in my work.  When I am slack in the work I have to do (the dull, everyday tasks such as menu planning, folding diapers, etc.), I find that my heart becomes bitter.  But when I throw myself heartily into serving my family, I can find joy because I know I am serving God.  The same is true in other areas of life, not just being a homemaker.

When I (we) work “as for the Lord and not for men” it changes our perspective.  Rather than feeling hurt that no one notices what we do each day or appreciates our hard work, we can be confident that God sees our faithfulness.  This should change our perspective.

We are reminded in verse 24, “knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.”  We aren’t promised that others will applaud our work or even notice it, but it is true that the Lord sees it.  Our reward is from Him.

This passage concludes by stating outright: “You are serving the Lord Christ.” It’s pretty obvious here, right? While, yes, we are serving our families day in and day out, ultimately we are serving Christ.

Serving my family brings me joy, and many times they do express gratitude for the work I do, but the world certainly doesn’t recognize the value of homemaking.  Rather than expect acclaim from others, I am seeking to bring glory to God each day and work heartily unto Him!

God is Always Good

If you’re a new reader, you may want to take a second and read this post from November, where I shared about why we left the ministry last year, and what had transpired from August to November.

Today, I’m picking up where we left off in November… no ministry position, no job, no more severance, no insurance…

I’ll jump right to the good part:  Tad is starting a new job today!  The job is full-time, includes benefits, and will allow him to work from home partially while doing something in his skill set (computer repairs) that he will (hopefully) enjoy!

I know you will rejoice with us and say along with us that God is good!

But I want to remind you that God is always good.

When Tad left this morning for his new job, God was good.  When Tad lost his job in August (you know, the one he left his other ministry job for when I was 40 weeks pregnant with Jude), God was still good.

When new babies are born, God is good.  When mothers wait with empty arms for a child, God is good.

When God provides in amazing ways and miraculously makes ends meet, He is good.  When payments are missed and houses are foreclosed, God is still good.

When we are blessed with health and longevity, God is good.  But just as equally, when we are sick and when people die, God is good.

When tornadoes pass over us and do not touch down in our neighborhood, God is good.  When tornadoes and floods and hurricanes and fires destroy everything, God is good.

No matter the trial or the celebration, God is good, and He is faithful.

Over the last nine months of Tad’s unemployment (six months without a regular, full-time paycheck), God was so faithful to provide for our family, using His Church (the body of Christ, not one particular congregation) to meet our practical needs.  Tad worked like crazy doing more part-time jobs than I can count, most of which were mind-numbingly boring.  God took care of our family and gave us hope, even in our bleakest moments.

When I wrote that post last November, I had no idea that it would be another six months until Tad had full-time work.  We know that God worked good in our character during that time, and we have so many stories of His faithfulness to share with others and with our children when they get older.

You may be facing something challenging today.  Hold on to hope.  God is always, always good!

“Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love.”
Psalm 33:18
“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
Psalm 42:11

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we
rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings,
knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character,
and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame,
because God’s love has been poured into our hearts
through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
Romans 5:1-5

Making Time for Quiet Time

May 5, 2014 by Aliesha

In talking with women of different ages and seasons of life, a common struggle we all seem to share is finding time to spend in the Bible and in prayer.  I remember in high school in my small group that my mom led, many of us high school girls were struggling to find time to have a quiet time with the Lord.  I remember my mom telling us that there will never be a season of life that is easier to have a quiet time than right now!

Recently I was around a group of women ranging from college students to single working women to married women with kids to married women without kids.  Many of the women expressed their desire to be in the Word more, yet admitted to struggling with finding the time.  If you’re struggling too, you’re not alone!

Two takeaways from both of these stories:
   1) Right now is the best time to start having a consistent quiet time (it won’t get easier… you have to get in the habit now!)
   2) We’ll never just “find time” to spend with the Lord; we have to make time

As you know, I’m a mom of three, ages three, two, and seven months.  My house is seldom “quiet” (or at least not for very long!).  I’m learning this year particularly about the importance of getting up earlier in order to have time reading my Bible and praying before I need to take care of the kids.

I really don’t think that morning is the best time for everyone, but I do know that it is beneficial to me.  When I start the day right by spending time with the Lord, I see that I have more energy and patience and am less likely to snap (oh, I still do though, and I am thankful for the grace that’s there for that!).

Honestly, when you have a newborn or a crazy work schedule or life is just happening at warp speed, it can be tricky to find a consistent time each day.  When Jude was younger, I read while I was nursing him in the mornings.  Sometimes I had the girls piled up on the bed too.  These quiet times weren’t “great,” but I was striving to be faithful.

I love what Lydia Brownback says in Joy:

Busy mothers of young children have perhaps the hardest time maintaining a vital, joy-filled faith.  Exhaustion, lack of adult companionship, and the endless routine of mundane tasks leave little time to sneak off alone for Bible reading and prayer…. Mothers or not, we all go through seasons in which our faith walk seems to be in mere maintenance mode rather than thriving and vital.  It is a testing of our faith.  At such times we find out whether our faith rests on the truth of Christ or on the good feelings we get after a lengthy quiet time.  Although time alone with God in the Word is vital, ultimately, being upright in heart means simply relying on Christ, and so long as we are doing that, we are growing spiritually.

I was in “maintenance mode” for that season when I was reading my Bible while nursing Jude in the mornings.  Now, I’m starting to emerge from that, spending more time earlier in the day alone and uninterrupted, reading Scripture, journaling, and praying.

I’m finding Instagram a great place to share what God is teaching me, and I have recently been challenged by Kristin to share what I read each day for 31 Days (every day in May).  I use the hashtags #lampandlight and #shereadstruth, if you want to join in on sharing about your quiet time each day!

Here are some tips for Making Time for Quiet Time:
-pick a time (preferably the same time each day)
-pick a place (somewhere where you won’t be distracted)
-choose a book of the Bible (reading through Scripture in its context is better than just jumping around)
-grab a journal for writing down what you’re learning
-be consistent
-give yourself grace (if you miss a day, all is not lost!)

As I have endeavored to be faithful in spending time in the Bible in 2014, I am seeing my love for God’s Word grow even more.  It takes effort and sometimes sacrifice to make time for your devotions, but I promise, you’ll never walk away thinking that it wasn’t really worth it!  God’s Word is living and active and it will transform you!
