Educational Books for Kids {Gift Ideas & Homeschool Resources!}

December 5, 2016 by Aliesha

Educational Books for Kids of All Ages | Non-fiction books to inspire a love of learning! | Feathers in Our NestI love books.  Our kids love books.  We have SO many books in our home, but we keep adding more!  There’s just no better way to invest in our children’s minds than by buying good books for them!

Today I’ve compiled a list of some really incredible educational books for kids of all ages!  Many of these span various age levels, so you can plan on having these on your shelves for years to come.  Instead of grouping by age, I’ve grouped by topic… everything from science to geography to computer coding to art!  (You may realize that I left history off this list. I think that subject needs a post of its own!)

And what better time of year to buy books than at Christmas?  Stock up for the cold winter months so you have plenty of excellent reading material for those long, dark days!

Be sure to read all the way to the bottom of the post where I have an Amazon coupon code to share with you!

I’m not even kidding… at least one of my children uses an Usborne Wipe-Clean book every day.  They are fantastic books!  My younger ones love to do this book while I work with Vera on her handwriting.

Science & Nature

We’ve used some of the Usborne Beginners series as part of our science curriculum this year. The text is easy to understand and the photos are gorgeous!  We really enjoyed the Caterpillars and Butterflies book.

This book is gorgeous!  The hand-drawn illustrations look like they came out of a nature journal.  Vera loves to copy drawings and diagrams out of it.  We also reference this one during school!

I don’t have this one yet, but it looks so fun!  It includes prompts and activities for little explorers (probably age 7 and up) as they create their own nature journal.

Geography

This looks like a beautiful book!  We don’t have it yet, but I would love to add it to our collection.  It shows many different homes around the world!  Great for teaching about animal habitats as well as about other cultures.

We’ve all been inspired by this art treasury.  It includes famous paintings and pieces of art, along with a way to emulate the style or method by which it was created.  We enjoyed the Jackson Pollock chapter especially!

This is technically for parents and instructors, but perhaps a motivated older child could read it themselves.  I bought it so I can teach my children how to draw. Very unique method of instruction, and it looks like it will be very fun to do!

Math & Technology

I really want this book!  With a husband in the technology field, we definitely want our kids to learn about computers and coding!  This one explains how computers work.

This is a bit above my kids’ level at the moment, but I think it will be a lot of fun when they’re ready!  Who doesn’t love stalling at bedtime?

Can’t wait to start doing some coding projects with our kids in a couple of years.  This book looks awesome!

Poetry

We’ve been reading this poetry book in our homeschool this year.  Some poems are funny and some are serious, but all of them are accompanied by gorgeous photographs of animals.

This looks like a really neat poetry book too!  Maybe we’ll get it to read over the summer.

Theology

I’m so glad this book is the basis of our Bible curriculum this year!  It explains theology in such good (yet rich) ways.  Even Jude (3) can track with it.  Highly recommend!

How to Be Best Friends with Your Daughter {Guest Post}

December 1, 2016 by Aliesha

Today I am thrilled to introduce you to Sisi Roose!  I met her this fall at a conference, and I was so impressed by her obvious love for the Lord and her close relationship with her mom and her siblings.  I invited her to write a guest post and share this important message (how to be best friends with your daughter) with you today!  Enjoy!  ~AlieshaHow to Be Best Friends With Your Daughter | Feathers in Our Nest

How to Be Best Friends with Your Daughter

Handing my mom her coffee I curled up on the couch and stared out the window with her.  Curls of steam from my coffee seemed to dance with the falling leaves outside and I smiled.  Ten years ago I would never have dreamed that my mom would someday be my best friend.  I’m 23 now and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, now you’re probably wondering, how did that happen?

Sometimes I wonder the same thing.  And I’ll be honest, there were a lot of changes that took place in my heart, but along the way my mom was intentional about these five things.  And I think these five things are the key to the relationship that we have today and the relationship you can have with your daughter, too.

Spiritual Growth and Accountability

For as long as I can remember our family has participated in daily devotions together; whether Daddy read a devotional aloud to us before we went to bed each night or we had personal time with the Lord and shared from our journals every morning before swim practice.

This time provides two things.  First of all, it’s accountability to seek the Lord daily, because daily there’s someone expecting to hear what we’ve learned or received from Him.  Secondly, it keeps us on the same spiritual page.  When we share from our journals we’re each given a glimpse into each other’s walk with the Lord; sometimes that let’s my mom know I’m struggling, and other times I learn how to seek God better through my mom’s example. How to Be Best Friends With Your Daughter | Feathers in Our Nest

One-on-one Time

During and after high school, I helped my mom home school my younger siblings.  I loved working with my mom, however when you’re laboring together day-in and day-out it’s easy to forget each other’s awesomeness.  So, we go on dates.

Dates don’t have to be fancy; they can be a quick trip to grab coffee.  The point is to set aside time to appreciate your daughter away from work and away from the normal routine where flaws are all too obvious.  It’s a chance for her to appreciate you, too.

Affirmation

As a mom I know you want to absolute best for your daughter.  When you correct or critique her, it’s with her best interest in mind.  But as I daughter I know that your well-meaning critique is actually a heart-wrenching discouragement.  Please bear with me here!

You see, more than anything else we want your approval.  One word of encouragement from you means more than thirty words of encouragement from anyone else. I understand that we need your correction (I wouldn’t be who I am today, without my mom’s direction), but if you can remember to encourage at least as much as you correct, you’ll have a new best friend fast! How to Be Best Friends With Your Daughter | Feathers in Our Nest

Don’t Take it Personally

Your daughter is going to be a mess sometimes.  That was the warning!

Now, hear this: Her mess is NOT your fault.

James 1:2-4 says that we are going to face trials of many kinds so that we may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  The truth of the matter is, that God loves your daughter so much that He is going to go to great lengths to teach her to own her faith.

I struggled through things you would never expect a homeschooled daughter to walk through.  And, it wasn’t because my mom didn’t protect me or neglected to help me memorize bible verses.  I knew the truth.  But God knew I needed to own the truth and my faith.

So, when your daughter walks through “fire,” don’t blame yourself or own her pain.  Listen.  Be there.  Know that God is in control.  And, don’t stop praying.

Set the Example

So, back to the encourage-more-than-correct thought, set the example. A couple of years ago my mom told me almost every day, “Sisi, you need to learn to rest.  Sisi, enjoy life.  Sisi, try to have fun living.”  I HATED it… and ignored her (see, I’m not quite the perfect daughter you may have thought me to be)

Then one day, I noticed my mom had been taking naps pretty frequently and that she was happier and home schooling was going a whole lot better.  So, I took a nap and went for a walk.  Before I knew it, my life was so much more of a happier thing!

You see, it wasn’t my mother’s correction that spoke the loudest, but her example.  So, if you really want to re-direct your daughter, set the example!

Closing Thoughts

Sitting on the couch now with my mom sipping the last few drips of coffee, I know she’s not perfect.  She’s human–very human–and makes mistakes just like I do.  But it was the lessons she shared from her time with God, our early morning coffee dates, all the years she loved me through my mess, the moments she encouraged me with words, and the example she set of being a daughter of God that brought us to this place.

So, these are our five secrets, but know this, dear mommies, first and foremost, you’re a daughter of the King of Kings.  If you forget everything I’ve listed in this post, but you live out this identity with untethered devotion and grace, your daughter will watch and follow.  And, that’s when your daughter becomes not only your daughter, but your friend and sister in Christ.

Your turn!  What’s your favorite thing to do with your daughter(s)?

On that note:  I wanted to personally invite you to a super special mother/daughter event I’m hosting this January.  It’s specifically created to give high school girls and their moms one-on-one time to discover their purpose and navigate life after high school.  My team and I can’t wait to spend these three days with you sharing our struggles and victories, making journals, and engaging in real conversations about living for God’s glory, enjoying life, and becoming who we were created to be.How to Be Best Friends With Your Daughter | Feathers in Our Nest

Tips for Creating Perfect Holiday Cards {& a Minted Giveaway!}

November 28, 2016 by Aliesha

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We had a great weekend with family (and, of course, enjoyed TONS of good food)!

Now that it’s officially the Christmas season, it’s time to talk about holiday cards!  I love taking the time to design, order, and mail out greetings to my friends and family members, and while I know some people prefer not to send out cards anymore, it’s a tradition I don’t think will ever go out of style!

Today I’m partnering with Minted to share some tips for creating perfect holiday cards!

Tips for creating perfect holiday cards | tips for designing the best Christmas cards | beautiful photo cards | Minted review + giveaway!

Tips for Creating Perfect Holiday Cards

Decide on photos first

With so many options to pick from when it comes to card designs, I find it is easier to decide on the photo (or photos) that I want to use, and then pick the card that fits best with my photo plan!  On Minted.com, you can easily select which designs you want to see based on the number of photos (1, 3+, etc.).

Pick a style that reflects you

Select a design that fits with your family’s personal style.  I’m obviously all about photos and scripty text, so the design I chose was perfect for us!  Maybe you like clean, minimalistic designs, or bright, non-traditional holiday colors.  You’ll definitely be able to find a design that fits your aesthetic!

Make it personal

Besides adding family photos, you can also personalize your design (in many cases) by changing the colors, the shape of the card, or (my favorite) adding a little paragraph about your family’s year or a special personalized greeting.

Order early

Now is the time to order rather than waiting until mid-December.  You will have more flexibility in shipping options, plus you’ll have more time for stuffing envelopes and still getting your cards out on time!

Have the envelopes addressed

Did you know that Minted will address your envelopes for free?  I know!  It’s amazing.  Pick your card design, then look for the little note on the sidebar that says “FREE Recipient Addressing.”  All I did was upload my addresses, and then Minted printed the recipient addresses for me.  This saves a ton of time and will definitely help you get those cards out in the mail on time!

I was so excited with how my Christmas cards turned out!  I picked a design that had lots of spaces for pictures (this one) so I could share a whole bunch of our family photos!

Tips for creating perfect holiday cards | tips for designing the best Christmas cards | beautiful photo cards | Minted review + giveaway!

I loved how easy it was to add my photos on Minted’s website.  I could easily swap photos around and resize them as needed.  So simple!

I chose gold envelope liners to add a little something extra special to my greetings.  I love that it makes such a beautiful first impression!

I chose a design that opened up for even more sharing potential!  I was able to add even more photos, as well as a little personal paragraph with some special words I wanted to say.  The back of the card is blank, which gives me a space to write a little note if I want to.

Isn’t the little “C” monogram on the front fun?  It’s sweet little touches like that which make our card feel personal and designed just for us.  Love it!

Like I said, having Minted address our envelopes for us is a HUGE timesaver!  Of course I always love the chance to practice my hand-lettering, but I’m so glad that this year I can just add stamps and call it a day.

I know I’ll treasure this year’s card and enjoy looking back at the sweet photos of my children and family.  I hope that the Christmas greetings we send will be a blessing to others!
