Charleston Trip Part 2

October 27, 2014 by Aliesha

In case you missed part 1 of our Charleston trip, you can read about it before you read this one!

Saturday was another full day as well!  We wore comfortable shoes and planned to (once again) be in the city all day!

Our first stop was Glazed, a local gourmet doughnut shop.

The long line made us feel like we’d made a good choice!  They often sell out by 10 or 10:30, so it’s important to get there early.

They have lots of unique flavors in addition to your standard fare.

Their “signature” doughnut is called the purple goat.  It has a berry goat cheese filling with a lavender glaze.

Tad got the maple bacon (naturally), and I had to try the purple goat!

Both were delicious.  Seriously.

We walked to the farmer’s market at Marion Square and were totally impressed with the abundance of produce, vendors, and food!

Every single booth was thoughtfully set up and had beautifully designed branding.

This was a fun little pecan booth that let you sample the various types!

After the farmer’s market, we decided to walk down King again and head towards the gateway walk.

The gateway walk starts at St. John’s Lutheran Church and meanders through several cemeteries, gardens, and church grounds.

This was the gate and door at St. John’s.

This is the Unitarian Church.  We were able to go inside and see the lovely interior architecture.

Walking through the cemetery was interesting.  We saw this giant “monument” to “Our Pastor.”

The garden was completely overgrown because the Unitarian Church believes in allowing nature to reassert itself.

So many beautiful gates!

We didn’t do the whole gateway walk because we were starting to get hungry.  As we walked back to our car, we saw my favorite window box of the trip!

Beautiful succulents!

For lunch, we drove to Taco Boy!

It was hopping, so we knew we’d made another good choice!

The inside was so cool, with string lights, fun light fixtures, and an industrial feel.

We had a hard time deciding on what kinds of tacos to get, since there were so many delicious options!

Tad ordered a sauteed shrimp taco with cabbage, salsa, and yogurt sauce, as well as a fried chicken taco with jalepeno cilantro mayonnaise and chipotle bbq sauce.

I ordered a kimchi beef taco with Korean bbq sauce, flank steak, and kimchi, as well as a tempura shrimp taco with cabbage, cilantro, and nuevo remoulade. Needless to say, the tacos were phenomenal!!

After lunch we went to Black Tap Coffee for some cold brew coffee.

The shop was very cute and even had a little lending library.

Loved this Charleston map!

I don’t have pictures of our afternoon, because we decided to go to Goodwill!  It was fun to shop at a different Goodwill in a very nice area.  I found a couple tops.  We also went to a HUGE Dollar Tree!

We changed for dinner, then drove to the restaurant!

For our dinner Saturday night, we chose Slightly North of Broad, or S.N.O.B.  The restaurant had probably the best atmosphere and decor of any of the places we visited all weekend, and also the BEST food!

To start, we had bread and cornbread and Carolina quail with braised greens, cornbread stuffing, and muscadine glaze.

Tad ordered the roasted lamb rack with green beans, pearl onions, sweet pepper relish, and rosemary reduction.  He was in heaven!

I ordered the pan seared duck breast with savory blue cheese bread pudding, fig jam, Brussels sprouts, and a honey-thyme reduction.  It was probably the best meal I’ve ever eaten!

For dessert we got a slice of triple chocolate cheesecake with sea salt and strawberries!  It was a stellar end to a perfect meal.

We would definitely, definitely eat at S.N.O.B. again!

Before we went back to our hotel, we stopped by Cracker Barrel.  Tad challenged me to a game of checkers and I agreed, but then we both realized we had forgotten some of the rules!  Tad looked up the rules on his phone and we played a game (I won).

And that was our second full day!  We walked over 10 miles that day as well!

One more part… coming soon!

Charleston Trip Part 1

October 24, 2014 by Aliesha

To celebrate five years of marriage, Tad and I were so blessed to be able to take a trip back to Charleston, SC, where we honeymooned!  We had an amazing time together.  Tad’s parents were so kind to watch all three kids for the whole weekend.  We didn’t worry about the kids at all!

We had been saving for the trip for a while, and we paid cash for everything on the trip. We got our hotel through Priceline which helped us get a great deal!

Our drive down on Thursday night was beautiful.  We got to see a gorgeous sunset and have uninterrupted conversation!

When we checked into our hotel, the woman at the front desk thought we couldn’t be older than 21.  We thought that was pretty funny!

The next morning, we left early to head into the city!  Our hotel was in North Charleston, so we had a 15-20 minute drive into Charleston (no biggie!).

We stopped by the visitor’s center first to grab a few flyers and take a fun picture!

I did TONS of research before our trip of all the best places to eat, so I had every meal and snack totally planned out.  ðŸ™‚  Our first stop was Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit.

This charming little biscuit shop is tiny and adorable, and it has an excellent (well-earned!) reputation for delicious biscuits!

We got two kinds of biscuits: black pepper bacon and blackberry.  They were both flaky and buttery with unique flavors.  Tad also got a cup of French press coffee, and he says it was the best cup of coffee all weekend!

Callie’s is located on King Street, so we wandered down King for most of the morning.  There were so many fun little “alleys” and gardens!

The William Aiken house is so pretty!

I got to browse Anthropologie for eye candy and inspiration!  We browsed several other fun shops on King as well.

THEN Tad suggested we go in Urban Outfitters because the front of the building looked cool and historic.  We were pleasantly surprised to see the inside was an old theatre!

The architectural details were simply amazing.

That chandelier!!

Later we went online and read about the history of the building.  It used to be the Garden Theatre (opened in 1918) and it originally showed silent films.  The foyer was filled with hanging plants and flowers and birdcages with real songbirds!  Very fascinating.

We snuck into the photo booth for a minute.

I love the juxtaposition of industrial and ornate.  This theatre must have been elaborate in its day!

We drove to Butcher & Bee for lunch (while it was also on King St., it was not within walking distance).

Butcher and Bee has a really cool vibe with big tables, old chairs, sweet tea in mason jars, and a changing menu.

Tad got a lamb pita with Israeli salad, cabbage, and tahini.  He said it was fantastic!

I ordered a roast beef sandwich with onion jam, mayo, and chimichuri.  They make their bread in house, I believe!

This cool art display was hanging above our table.  So, overall, Butcher and Bee had delicious food and a great atmosphere and we’d go back again!

After lunch we found parking on the roof of a parking garage, so we got to take in this beautiful view of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge!

Charleston is known as the Holy City because of all the church steeples!

Again, there are so many amazing gardens!

We loved all the wrought iron gates.

We walked through Philadelphia Alley several times.  It’s not wide enough for cars to use, so you can only take it in by foot.

Waterfront Park is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy a nice breeze!

This fountain was beautiful and we saw several kids playing in it.

We walked out on the pier, then we walked further down to the famous pineapple fountain.  It wasn’t turned on when we were there because they were doing work on it.

One of the many churches with beautiful architecture.

I was just in love with all the amazing typography and branding of every single restaurant and business.

Tad and I visited Paolo’s for some gelato in the afternoon!  We went there many times on our honeymoon, so it was fun to go back!

They make fresh flavors of gelato each day.

I had pink lemonade gelato and Tad had mocha.

We walked back by the William Aiken house and could see it was set up for a wedding on the grounds!  SO pretty!

Even though we just had gelato, we had walked like 8 miles so far that day, AND we were on vacation, so we went to Jeni’s for some splendid ice cream!

It was cute inside!

They have TONS of unique flavors that you won’t see at just any ice cream shoppe!

Tad and I split two scoops of black currant lambic sorbet and riesling poached pear sorbet!  They were so good together!

I definitely want to visit Jeni’s again!

While we were walking again we saw this cute patio behind a restaurant.  Looked like it would be fun to eat there!

Even the manhole covers are beautiful in Charleston.

I thought this heron gate was pretty!

Before dinner, we sat on a bench (back at the waterfront park again) and talked to the kids briefly.

Window boxes are a huge thing in Charleston.  They were all so gorgeous!

Tad and I made a few quick changes and we were ready for dinner!

I took of my chambray shirt, took my hair down, swapped out my sandals for heels, and added red lipstick and more mascara!  BAM… ready for our dinner date!!

We ate at Cypress for dinner and we enjoyed the atmosphere, professionalism of the staff, and delicious food.  We started off with artisan bread.

We ordered tableside Caesar salad, which our waiter came and prepared (dressing and all) for us!  Delicious!

For the main course, we had grilled rib eye with black truffle demi-glace! It was out of this world.  We could cut it with a butter knife!

For dessert we enjoyed peanut butter bread pudding with ice cream and toasted peanuts!  It was so sweet of them to add this little anniversary wafer.

That was the first day!  I think all told we walked ten miles on Friday.

I’ll share days 2 and 3 in future posts!

Five Years

October 17, 2014 by Aliesha

Tad and I have been married for five years today!  We decided to share five things we’ve learned in five years of marriage.  (We wrote these separately and didn’t read the other person’s until we had written ours. Fun, right?)

Five Lessons We’ve Learned in Five Years

From Tad:

1) I have learned to think before I speak
I naturally have no filter. None. Do you want to know what I am thinking at this exact moment? Just listen to me speak. If I am not speaking I am probably not thinking. This gets me in lots of trouble, and over the course of the five years we’ve been married, I have learned to not say everything on my mind, and to also think through how I phrase things so that what I say is not offensive.

2) I have learned to ask forgiveness
When I have done something to hurt my wife (or anyone else for that matter) immediately asking for forgiveness is a good idea.

3) I have learned to be more patient
I want things my way, and I want it my way right now. There are three kinds of ways something can be done. The right way, the wrong way, and the Tad way (which most people believe is
the wrong way, but faster). I have learned that being patient with others is key when two people are living life together.

4) I have learned that marriage is hard work
Life is not a romantic comedy that ends with a happily ever after after the couple say their vows. Living with and loving a person unconditionally is not easy, not matter how awesome they are. It is constant learning experience, but the joy is that you do not have to do it on your own. I have an amazing partner in my wife, who is with me every step of the way. Each challenge we face is one we take on together.

5) I am learning how women think
Okay, this is not actually true. If I knew how women think, and I could explain it to other guys, and I would be as rich as Bill Gates. I do not understand women, but I do seek to know and care for my wife.

From Aliesha:

1) Prioritize personal growth
First and foremost, if I’m not growing in my relationship with the Lord, my marriage will be struggling too.  I have learned that being in God’s Word daily is vital to being a good wife (and mom)!

2) Communication is key
The times I have felt like our relationship has been rocky have been the times when we haven’t communicated very well or very often.  It’s easy to slip into bad communication habits, but in order to thrive in your marriage, you have to talk through things with one another!

3) Speak their love language
It’s great to do nice things for your spouse, but make sure you’re speaking their love language! I enjoy showing love to Tad through his primary love languages, and he does the same for me.

4) It’s harder than it looks
There are ups and downs in any marriage, and there is a lot of hard work involved.  It’s so wonderful as well!  Until you get married, though, you don’t know how hard it can be or how beautiful.

5) Marriage is sanctifying
Our marriage is one of the primary ways God is sanctifying me and changing my heart to be more like His!  Marriage exposes weaknesses, polishes off raw edges, strengthens skill sets, and knocks down pride.  Marriage makes you realize every single day how much you need the gospel.  I’m thankful for Christ’s sanctifying work in me through my marriage to Tad!

Happy fifth anniversary, Tad!  I love you and look forward to celebrating at least 60 more anniversaries with you!
