Family Devotions Currently

March 21, 2014 by Aliesha

A while back, Tad shared here and here about why family devotions are important.  When we first started doing devotions with Vera, we really started out small… working on a memory verse, singing some songs, and praying.

We still keep things really simple, but this year we started learning the New City Catechism (children’s version).  We’re eight questions in (there are fifty-two), and Cordelia is actually learning some of the answers along with Vera!

Here you can watch Vera working on her questions (this was a week ago, so we were all still learning the eighth question).  Notice how CC helps her out with an answer at one point!

I think it’s important to note that Vera was exceptionally well-behaved for this video, which may give you the impression that sitting on Daddy’s lap is easy for her.  She’s a wiggle-worm, so it’s a big deal that she is growing in obedience and self-control!

In addition to working on our catechism, we also sing songs and pray.  We chose quite a mixture of songs, from the ones that go along with our catechism (by Songs for Saplings) to children’s Bible songs (The B-I-B-L-E, Jesus Loves Me, etc.) to hymns (Trust and Obey, Be Thou My Vision, the Doxology, etc.) to contemporary songs (10,000 Reasons, All I Have Is Christ, etc.) to seasonal selections (Christmas and Easter songs).  We usually do 5-10 songs each night, depending on everyone’s attitudes and how late it is.

We close our devotion time by singing the Doxology.  Tad always prays for us after that.  Recently, we’ve started asking Vera what we can pray for her about.  Usually it’s about a sore finger/toe/elbow, but sometimes she asks for prayer to be more loving or something like that.

Most evenings, family devotions are crazier than a three-ring-circus.  For real.  Kids are twirling around the room, usually one out of three kids crying at a given moment, and certain people do not want to sing/say questions/etc.  Our girls can be crazy and wild most nights!  But we keep persevering at this anyway, knowing that it will reap eternal rewards as the Gospel takes hold of our children’s hearts.  This is totally worth it!

I’ll also add, most mornings I do a brief devotion time with the girls after breakfast.  We worked on learning 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 in February (“our love verse,” we call it), and I’m hoping to start a short Easter passage soon.

We strive to make our home a Christ-centered place, though we fail many days.  We are thankful that His grace is there even when we are weak!  I’m praying that my children grow up with fond memories of the time we spent as a family worshipping God together.

The Mess Is the Ministry

October 16, 2013 by Aliesha

I have told several people recently that right now I feel like all I do each day is go from mess to mess cleaning up after others!  Can you relate?

For example, last week I was changing a poopy diaper in my room and something in my “mom radar” sensed that all was not well.  Sure enough, as I walked into the girls’ bedroom, one of my offspring was generously applying Desitin to her face and hair (and of course sharing so nicely with her sister).

Earlier the same week, I found myself whisper-yelling (while on the phone) to the same child to, “Stop this fooling around RIGHT NOW and put your underwear BACK ON!”  (I laughed as soon as I said it, realizing how ridiculous I sounded to the person on the other end of the line!)

I could go on about mysterious puddles of water in the bathroom (which child did this?), strange stains on the carpet (what is this?), piles of laundry (is this clean or dirty?), boxes of dry pasta emptied onto the floor in the midst of fixing dinner (a little dirt never hurt anyone, so you can bet I put it right back in the box), black ink pen on the dining room table (when did she even do this?), stickers on the walls (eh… at least she’s not writing on something!)… but I’m sure you get the point by now.

Do you ever have days/weeks/years like this?  As though the entirety of your day is spent cleaning up messes that you yourself did not create?  I would like to think that it will get better soon, but alas, my children are only getting taller, smarter, and stealthier!

This is a season of messes.

Sometimes there is disobedience involved (i.e. the Desitin incident), but other times it’s just foolishness, like the day recently when one of my daughters wedged a Triscuit into a slot of the printer that necessitated extraction using needle-nosed pliers.  Sometimes we discipline for the messes (when it is direct disobedience), but sometimes (most of the time), I just clean up the mess and try to maintain a sense of humor, all the while placing objects up higher out of their reach.

I’m tempted to believe that this constant cleaning up of messes is keeping me from my larger purpose–ministry to my family and to others–but the Lord has reminded me recently that this is my ministry.

Cleaning up after my children (and my–hopefully–appropriate response to it) is one of my primary ministries right now!  Gently responding in love to a child who has been foolish or disobedient is how I can reflect Christ to my family right now.

Do I always respond in the right way?  Of course not!  I know that God is using this for my personal sanctification (growing to be more like HIM) as well.

I am trying to embrace this busy season and realize that in the midst of messes lies exactly the ministry God has for me today!

Saving My Sanity: Packing Lists, Safety Pins, & Pre-Trip Cleaning

July 25, 2013 by Aliesha

– I created generic packing lists for every time we travel
I created a “basic” packing list for everyone in our family, typed it up, and saved it on the computer.  Whenever we’re packing for a trip, I just print out the lists, add anything specific to that particular trip, and pack us up.  The lists are the same regardless of the season, so if we’re traveling in December, I just cross off “swimsuit,” etc.  It really saves a LOT of time (and mental energy) to not have to create new packing lists every time we hit the road!  I (almost) never forget anything when we travel!

-I mark tablecloths, sheets, and other large items with a safety pin when washing so I can find the stain
Have you ever washed a stained tablecloth and not been able to tell if the stain came out or not?  I have!  Now I place a small safety pin near the stain so I know exactly where to check to see if the stain came out before drying it.  This is a timesaver and saves me from ruining a tablecloth by setting in the stain in the dryer!

-I clean the house before I leave for a trip
Even if we’re just going to be away for a day or two, I clean the house before we leave.  If it’s going to be a week, I definitely make sure to clean out the fridge before I go!  Coming home to a clean house is SO nice after being away, and it makes transitioning back to “normal life” easier.  Recently, I did NOT do this tip, and I spent 3-4 days getting the house back to normal once we got home from our trip.  It is much easier to clean before leaving!
