New Kitchen Curtains

June 4, 2014 by Aliesha

After living in our home for four years, I finally made some curtain valances for our kitchen!  I am not a seamstress at all, but I try to at least make curtains since custom curtains can be really pricey!

It’s super simple to make this kind of valance.  Just cut your fabric to the size you want (mine worked out perfectly so I was able to get 2 panels out of one 45″ wide and 2 yard long piece of fabric).  Hem all four edges, then attach curtain clips to the top edge, then hang on the rods.  That’s it!  It took me an hour to make the panels and iron them, and then Tad hung the curtains for me (which took another 30-45 minutes).

I’m in love with this fabric!

Korean Beef Bowl

April 24, 2014 by Aliesha

When I conducted my reader survey a while back, many of you mentioned that you’d like to see more frugal recipes!  We eat a lot of healthy, inexpensive meals, so I’m going to start sharing more of them with you!

This recipe is fast and simple, plus it’s very flavorful.  The beef mixture freezes well, so if you make a double or triple batch, you can freeze portions for later.

I recently found a sale on grassfed beef ($2.38/lb.!) so I used that, but I’ve also made this with ground turkey and it’s really good as well.  We tend to go lighter on the meat so that it stretches further, but you can serve up larger portions of the beef mixture if you desire.

If you’re looking for a delicious, fast meal, definitely try this one!

Author: Aliesha @ Feathers in Our Nest
Recipe type: Main Dish
Cuisine: Asian
Ingredients
  • ⅓ cup pure maple syrup (I've also used sucanat successfully)
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. toasted sesame oil (good price at Trader Joe's)
  • ¼-1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • ¼ tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 lb. ground beef or turkey
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 green onions, finely sliced
  • hot cooked brown or white rice
Instructions
  1. (Before you start the recipe, start cooking your rice.)
  2. In a glass measuring cup, whisk together maple syrup, soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, crushed red pepper flakes, and ground ginger.
  3. Brown beef over medium heat.  When no longer pink, drain excess grease and return beef to pan.
  4. Add garlic and cook 30-60 seconds until fragrant.  Pour in sauce and half of the green onions.
  5. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Serve over hot cooked rice and garnish with remaining green onions.
  7. Enjoy!

Natural All-Purpose Disinfectant

March 31, 2014 by Aliesha

I’m used to cleaning up gross things on a pretty regular basis, so it’s important to me to have a cleaner to rely on that is safe to use all around the house.

I use this natural all-purpose disinfectant for cleaning all kinds of things!  Like I wrote on the bottle, it’s for anything nasty!

You’ll need:
-a spray bottle (mine is from the Dollar Tree)
-2 Tbsp. liquid castile soap (I use Dr. Bronners’)
-1 Tbsp. baking soda
-15 drops of Tea Tree or Melaleuca Essential Oil (I like to shop at Rocky Mountain Oils)
-water

Combine castile soap, baking soda, and essential oils in the spray bottle, then add enough water to fill up the bottle.  Shake well before each use!

This lasts a long time and is very economical to make!

For lots of other great cleaning recipes, I recommend the book Clean House, Clean Planet!
