Homeschooling Resources from the Target Dollar Section

June 15, 2016 by Aliesha

Have you all been to your Target dollar section lately?  (It’s called a lot of things… Bullseye’s Playground, the Dollar Spot, the One Spot… I can’t keep it straight what the actual, current name is!)

Anyway, they’ve just rolled out some AWESOME educational resources that are perfect for parents and teachers!  While I pretty much skipped over the classroom stuff (bulletin board borders, classroom banners & welcome signs, award papers, bookmarks, etc.), I can definitely see many teachers wanting to grab those wonderful goodies to use in their classrooms!

I was most interested in resources we could use as part of our homeschool (not just for this year, but many years to come), so I snatched up some really great stuff that I wanted to share with you.

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources Handwriting

First up, I found some things to help with handwriting and alphabet learning and recognition.  This chalkboard laptop is super fun, and I know the girls will have fun writing on it and pretending to type.  I think I actually got this double-sided lined dry erase board a few months ago, but they have these in the dollar spot pretty frequently.  You use dry erase markers with them and they’re wonderful for handwriting practice and learning letters.  I also like this cursive practice book (for down the road… we’re still working on printing) that is also wipeable.  These scra-ffiti ABC’s are really fun and the kids will enjoy playing with them.  It’s a fun pre-handwriting activity you can do almost anywhere!  I got the Dr. Seuss ABC cards because they “match” the ABC book we have.  Jude likes looking through these and telling me what the letters are.

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources Letter Cards

One of my favorite finds is this pack of wipeable letter cards.  They are double-sided, so there are 13 cards, each with two letters on them. It comes with a dry erase marker and a little pouch for storage.  Vera loves these, and I thought it would be a good activity for Cordelia to work on while Vera is writing letters on paper.

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources Chalkboard Laptop

This is a better look at the chalkboard laptop (it includes four pieces of chalk).

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources AlphabetThis word-building board is fun!  It’s magnetic and has spaces for spelling out words, leaving a blank so that the child can fill in the missing letter.  It includes over 50 magnets.  I can see lots of uses for it!  The magnetic alphabet letter set doesn’t technically go with the word-building board, but I think they would work with it!  My plan is to use them on cookie sheets (new ones from the Dollar Tree) for spelling, phonics, and more.  There are several “puzzle pairs” available currently, and I got the set that pairs letters with words and the set that forms a complete word.  Jude is currently “into” puzzles, so I think he’ll like these.  They had a bunch of clothespin activity sets (including color wheels, days of the week, etc.), but I ended up getting one that matches upper and lowercase letters, and one that matches the rhyming words.  I am hoping these will be things that Cordelia or Jude enjoy doing independently.  They also have a ton of flashcards (showing more later), but I liked these with rhyming words.

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources GamesFun and games!!  These are great car, plane, or waiting room activities.  I remember playing with a spirograph when I was young, so I was excited to find this.  Vera is the only one who can do it by herself at this point, but the others will learn too, I’m sure.  We’ve been having fun with this tic tac toe set!  It’s magnetic, so it’s perfect for keeping the pieces together and not lost!  We’ve played Find It Fast: Wild Animals several times, and Jude is SO good at it!  This game is like Spot It (which we also have), and it’s a fun activity that we can do together or independently.  Vera has been loving the Go Fish game, and it’s cute to see how she’s learning a bit of strategy while playing it!  These Imagine and Draw cards are nice for waiting rooms, since they’re quiet but also creative.  We took one set to the dentist yesterday!  Target had a few busy books, but this closures one was my favorite. Unbutton it to find velcro to unfasten, which then leads to a page you have to untie and unlace, then finally a zipper to unzip. Then do it in reverse: zip the zipper, lace up and tie, fasten the velcro, and button up!  So good for working on those practical skills in a fun way.

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources Language ArtsI grabbed a few workbooks (even though we’re not hugely into workbooks) because these looked really cute (and they came with a sheet of stickers).  This is another clothespin activity that I got a while ago but saw that they have again.  You match the picture to the letter that it starts with (and opening a clothespin is good for fine motor skills).  Jude likes doing this one.  I got more of these blank books (I’ve bought them before) because I think the girls will have fun writing and illustrating stories (with a little help) this year.  There are 8 books in the pack for $3.

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources Math

On to math resources!  We needed a new clock, as the last one was foam and had gotten destroyed.  This chalkboard clock is very good quality for $3.  Vera knows how to tell time a bit (hour and half hour), so we’ll keep working on that with her and the younger ones.  I like these snap number blocks!  Each block has either a number or a symbol on it, and you use them to create problems to solve. Very nice quality also!  Again, picked up a number workbook.  It’s too easy for Vera, but may be right for Cordelia and definitely Jude.  These magnetic shapes and numbers are the same size as the letters I showed above.  They are so cute and we’ll have fun playing with these on cookie sheets!  I got a few more of the wipeable cards: subtraction, addition, and money.  The money cards are for older kids, but we’ll use them when we get to that point!  I got this felt play money a while ago, but they have it in the dollar section again.  It’s $3, but it includes a lot of pieces.  We can use this for playing store (while learning the value of money)!  It’s easier to handle than the paper pretend money (and will hopefully last longer).

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources Books

I should have taken a picture of the inside of these workbooks, because they are so cute!  Jude loves dinosaurs and the girls have shown interest in space and planets (thanks to the Magic School Bus).  The books on the states and the presidents have a few facts about each as well as bright pictures.  Great for just $1!  Also picked up some more flashcards on flags of the world, the states, and musical instruments.  These won’t be for quizzing/drilling purposes, but just for looking through together and talking about.  I may punch holes in each set and put them on a ring.
Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources General

Okay, these may be the thing I was most excited about.  They are dry erase pockets for worksheets or whatever you want!  They are nice and thick and have a cute colored fabric border (I got yellow, but they had blue and red too).  You can use clear page protectors for this same idea, but these are thicker than that and hold a larger piece of paper.  You can just insert a page inside and then let the kid go to town filling it out or tracing it.  When they’re finished, just wipe it off!  Great for saving paper and not having to make a bunch of copies of a workbook you want to reuse.  I’m not sure what I’ll use these dry erase strips for, but I thought they were neat.  We can practice handwriting on them, but I think they may be for labeling desks or something.  I got the adhesive label pockets to label the bins I’m using to store all of these amazing resources!

Target Dollar Section Homeschool Resources Teacher Supplies Finally, I got some Dr. Seuss stickers and a set of highlighters (double-sided) and gel pens (really pretty colors) for me to use.

Phew!  I hope you enjoyed reading about the homeschool supplies I found in the Target dollar section!  Maybe this will help you know what to look for as you search for resources for your own family.

Have you found anything awesome at the Target Dollar Spot recently?

Frugal & Fabulous: Saving Money on Traveling

May 25, 2010 by Aliesha

Our summer is ridiculously busy this year! We are so excited about everything we’re getting to do, but we realize that it’s going to be CRAZY! We are attending three weddings within five weeks, all of which are out of state (in three different states), and we’re probably going on two other out of state trips as well. Oh, and we’re taking 10 teens to youth camp for a week (yes, I will be 34 weeks pregnant at the time…) and planning a children’s VBS-type event on 6 consecutive Tuesday mornings. We also have lots of other youth and children’s events throughout the summer, and Tad is preaching a few times. I will start having my midwife appointments every two weeks pretty soon, and we’re taking three baby-related classes (child birthing, breastfeeding, and baby care). Oh yes, and we are HAVING a baby this summer!

Maybe your summer is not as busy as ours is, and maybe it is even busier, but I wanted to share some of the things that we have done and are doing in order to make our out of town traveling as easy and frugal as possible.
1) Overnight Kits
Tad and I both have overnight kits that have all of the toiletries we need for a weekend trip. You can purchase empty bottles at big-box or drug stores (and I recently snagged a set at the Dollar Tree!). I filled the bottles with our toiletries (shampoo, cleanser, hair gel, etc.) so that we can just toss the kits in our bags and go! We share a travel-size toothpaste so that we only have to take one of those. Keeping our overnight kits stocked saves us money (we don’t have to buy travel-sized shampoos) and time (we aren’t scrambling to pack our toiletries on the morning we are leaving for our trip).

2) Packed Meals
When we go on a road trip, I try to pack at least one of the meals we will be eating while we are on the road. Some good things to pack in your cooler are: deli meat sandwiches, chicken salad, BLTs, wraps, fresh veggies (baby carrots are easy!), fruit (apples and grapes are good choices), water bottles (if you really want, you can add Crystal Light packets to them), yogurt or applesauce, and crackers or chips. We’ve even packed tossed salad, but that’s not something I would recommend the driver eating. 😉 Don’t forget to pack paper plates and napkins as well.

3) Packed Snacks
I know that if I don’t pack plenty of snacks, we will be tempted to buy (unhealthy) snacks at gas stations along the way. Last time we traveled, I packed a whole bag of healthy snacks from our pantry so we had plenty for on the way and on the way back! Some ideas of good “car snacks” that don’t need to be kept in a cooler are: goldfish crackers, peanut butter crackers, mini rice cakes, apples, bananas, 100-calorie packs of cookies or crackers, raisins, dried fruit, peanuts, granola bars, and muffins (especially nice if you are traveling in the morning). I also “pack” to-go cups of coffee if it’s an early morning trip!

4) Clean Car
I think that it is ESSENTIAL to start a road trip with a clean car! No, you don’t necessarily have to go through a car wash or vacuum under every seat, but at least take out all of the items that don’t belong (frisbees, books, other random items) and throw away all of the trash! You’ll feel so much nicer traveling in a clean car.

5) Stocked Car
Make sure you have a few emergency items in case you break down on your trip. We have a car kit that has road flares, a first aid kid, a poncho, etc. It is also important to have a flashlight and extra batteries! In the winter we always keep a big blanket in the car when we travel, and in the summer it is a good idea to have a jug of water. A road map is helpful if your GPS fails!

6) Things to Listen To
Being married to a pastor, I get to hear lots of sermons while we travel! 🙂 Tad often listens to sermons on road trips as a way of redeeming the time and preparing for future lessons. We also like to have a supply of good music available to listen to as well. (We like, among others, Indelible Grace and Sovereign Grace Music.) Another good way to pass the time is by listening to audio books! There is a huge supply of free audio books here at Libravox.

7) Sheetz Rewards Program
We signed up for this free program several months ago. (You can go here to learn more.) Just for signing up you get a one-time deal of $.50 off per gallon! You just swipe your card every time you purchase gas or food at Sheetz, and you accumulate points over time. But here’s the best part: card-holders get $.59 ANY SIZE drinks all the time at participating stores! (This includes all their fountain drinks, coffee, and slushes!) So, when Tad needs a “perk-me-up” on a five-hour drive (I don’t drink soda anymore), Sheetz is the place we stop! Can’t beat $.59 for a large fountain drink or slush.

Do you have any tips for frugal and easy car trips?

Frugal & Fabulous: Saving Money on Gift-Giving

April 22, 2010 by Aliesha

I hope that you enjoyed reading yesterday’s post about saving money on home decorating. Today I want to share some ideas for frugal and fabulous gifts!

1) Keep a stash of small gifts on hand
Sometimes you just need a little birthday, hostess, or thank-you gift, and it’s nice to have a small selection on hand. Some ideas are bath goodies (buy at Tuesday Morning, Ross, or on sale at Bath & Body Works), candles (pillar or taper; wrap with ribbon for a nice touch), a few yummy chocolates (package in a small decorative box), books (stock up on deeply discounted books at Christian bookstores and online), and stationary sets.

2) Store your gift-wrapping supplies and cards together
Rather than having to search all over the house for a pair of scissors, store your tissue paper, gift bags, ribbon, tape, scissors, and other supplies in one location for easy packaging in a hurry. Read about some gift stations here and here.

3) Keep cards on hand
Keep general birthday, thank-you, get-well, and other common occasion cards on hand so that you’ll always have one to use in a pinch. Buy in bulk from Current or snag 2/$1 cards from the dollar store. Purchase special cards (family member birthday cards, for example) months ahead of time and store in a filing box (separated by month) or a card storage notebook in your gift station. In the front of your filing box or card notebook, keep a list of birthdays and anniversaries of important people in your life.

4) Shop ahead
I have found that when I wait until the last minute to shop for a gift for someone, I end up feeling stressed and frustrated, and often I am not able to find the item that I had in mind. Start shopping before you HAVE to have their gift ready so that you can shop around to get a good deal (there I go again…) and allow yourself plenty of time to wrap and/or ship their gift if needed.

5) Pick a theme
This works in two ways. First, you can pick a theme for someone’s gift, such as purchasing a cake pan, measuring cups, measuring spoons, a spatula, a mixing bowl, and a favorite recipe for a bridal shower gift. Choosing a theme helps make your gift-giving seem less “random” and more heart-felt! Another idea is to make an Italian food gift basket (pasta, sauce, cheese grater, Italian music CD, candles, etc.) as an anniversary gift for a couple. Get creative! Theme-ing your gifts can be really fun.
Secondly, you can pick a theme for a year and have all your gifts be in that category! For example, we are giving books as birthday gifts to all of our family members this year. We shop ahead of time and purchase several books at once (to get free shipping from WTS or Amazon), and then we can mail them (we can use media mail!) to our family members if we won’t be seeing them around their birthdays.

6) Make gifts
Despite what you might think, you ARE creative enough to make gifts for people! Anything from crafts to sewing projects to handmade cards to baked goods can be given as gifts, and gifts made with love are deeply appreciated by the recipients. When giving handmade gifts, cater the gift to the person (use colors you know they’ll love, double the chocolate chips, etc.). Beautiful packaging (like boxes/bags from Garnish or Michael’s) can jazz up even the simplest of baked goods! (What cookies DON’T look better in crisp cellophane bags??) Include your recipe so they can make it again.

7) Give your time
Even if you don’t have a lot of money, you can still bless people by giving of your time. Offer to babysit their children, clean their house, wash their cars, or help them with house projects. Sometimes the gift of time is more appreciated than anything else!
