Easter and Catching Up

April 13, 2015 by Aliesha

So here’s the deal.  We had an amazing Easter weekend (including a church pig pickin’ on Saturday), worshiping at church on Sunday and celebrating Christ’s resurrection, then celebrating with friends over a large Easter feast (having friends over = MY FAVORITE), and then enjoying the glorious weather on a family walk.  928786_438128589694635_760451395_n

BUT… late in the night Sunday, we were struck by a stomach virus.  We went down like dominoes over the next few days, with only one member of our family being spared.  Last week was a blur of cleaning up after sick people, being sick, and once again, cleaning up after sick people.  Whew.  We were SO grateful for that bug to leave our house!!  On the plus side, I didn’t have to cook dinner all week, unless saltine crackers count as a meal.11116655_1582075318699257_657063604_n

After digging my way out of the piles of laundry, I was able to get away for the weekend with some awesome girlfriends from church!  We were celebrating Katie’s (below, blonde hair) 30th birthday, and it was such a fun, relaxing time away (especially after the crazy week!).  DSC_0767copysm The lady at the hotel front desk thought we were in college, so that made all of us mamas feel pretttttty darn good.  20926_741450400949_4747076885580558153_n

I think that mostly brings you up to speed on things… but I definitely plan to get back to blogging again!  Sorry for the hiatus last week.  I want to share my peach cobbler recipe as well as a pregnancy update, so watch for those later this week!

Just This & That

March 3, 2015 by Aliesha

Life has just been chugging along here, and while I don’t have any huge updates, I thought I’d share some of the little things happening here!

Playing
The kids have been playing together really well this week so far, and that’s been awesome.  The girls especially are becoming more imaginative in their play, whether it be kittens or babies or adventures in Narnia.

IGSansaSansa
Tad and I have a beautiful new niece who lives half a world away!  Nate, Tad’s brother who lives in China, and his wife Xiao Feng, just had a new baby, named Sansa. They are doing well!

IGTulipsSpring is springing
I think spring is beginning to “spring” here, as we have seen some warmer days lately.  We had more snow and a cold spell last week, but the weather is on a warming trend now!

IGCalligraphyCalligraphy
I’ve been learning modern Copperplate calligraphy through a course that Tad gave me for Christmas.  Some days I get frustrated with myself, but overall I’m seeing progress. I love the personalized feedback that the course provides.

IGEstherEsther
I lead a community ladies’ Bible study that meets twice a month, and we’ve just started studying the book of Esther.  It’s an interesting book!

Hospitality
We’ve been blessed to be able to show hospitality a little bit more lately.  We took a meal to friends who had a baby, we hosted family for CC’s birthday party, and we had a family from our life group over for dinner last weekend. We’re also looking forward to having some friends stay with us next week!

IGPeppersCooking
I’m using a real food meal-planning service to help me get back on track cooking healthy food every night!  The plan I’m using is veggie-heavy, which I love, as well as frugal to execute.

Pregnancy
One of these weeks I will put together a real pregnancy update post!  I’m 14 weeks now and feeling good most days.  Baby Apricot is starting to make his or her presence known, and I have a little bump now!

All of these photos are from my Instagram feed, so if you want, you can follow along over there!

The Blessing of Children in the Worship Service

January 29, 2015 by Aliesha

Children-in-Worship-ServiceAs I’ve mentioned a few times before here on the blog, we have chosen to keep our (older) children with us in the worship service.  We know the children’s ministry at our church is great (and we SO appreciate the nursery!!), but we’ve made this choice for our family.  Vera joined us when she was three, and Cordelia asked to come in too when she was just over two.

There are, of course, hard Sundays and challenges of keeping them in the worship service, but ultimately the blessings FAR outweigh any minor inconveniences.

Our girls really do absorb so much during the worship service.  We know this because they talk about it and play “church” throughout the week.

One day I overheard Vera playing church with Cordelia (this must have been six months ago):

“Hi! I’m Scot. I’m one of the others (elders) here. Pastor Ben is going to come up and preach the Word… (change in voice) Hi! I’m Ben. I’m one of the pastors. I’m gonna pray and then we’ll jump into what God has for us.” (I kid you not… Pastor Ben says that exact phrase!)

I was in the next room trying to hear without her knowing I was listening.  She then proceeded to lead singing (lead vocals and piano) while CC played the drums.  It was so amusing, but so beautiful at the same time to see her repeating things she had observed on Sundays!

Vera can now repeat certain elements of “liturgy” that are part of our worship services.  We don’t go to a liturgical church, but the order of the service is the same each week and many of the phrases that are used to explain giving, singing, and communion are the same each week.

The girls understand (somewhat) what communion is and what it represents.  They understand that the money given in the offering plates is for “Jesus” (we’ll probably start explaining soon how that is used in the local church and in sending other churches).

They are learning good, beautiful songs that we sing as a congregation.  I feel like my heart is going to explode sometimes when Vera is singing next to me at the top of her lungs, or when I hear Cordelia at home singing a hymn she learned at church!

I think sometimes we underestimate how much children are absorbing when they sit in church with us.  In addition to the things above, they also see our response to worship, our note-taking, our reverence for God’s Word, our interaction with other believers, and so much more.

I’m thankful for this blessing of worshiping God with my children beside me!
