March Reading

April 1, 2011 by Aliesha

11 in 2011
I’m trying to keep up with reading, even though life is really busy right now!  Here’s what I read in March (here’s January and February, in case you missed them):

Let Me Be a Woman by Elisabeth Elliot
This is a great book on godly womanhood.  I would highly recommend it to engaged or newly married women, but certainly there are timeless truths in it for all women, regardless of age.

The Angel of the Opera by Sam Siciliano
This is just a fun fiction book I read (for the third time now, actually) based on the premise of Sherlock Holmes solving the case of the Phantom of the Opera.  It’s a page turner and my “guilty pleasure” book, haha.  It’ll probably be the only fiction book I read all year, since I find non-fiction to be more edifying in my life.

Choosing Gratitude by Nancy Leigh DeMoss
AWESOME book!  I wrote a little bit about it here.  There is a 30-day devotional at the end of the book which I am going to start today.  I’m really excited about that, since this book has been quite revolutionary for me.

Currently, I am reading:

Lies Women Believe and the Truth that Sets Them Free by Nancy Leigh DeMoss (re-read; studying all year in our women’s Bible study; I’m three chapters in)
I gave a little summary of our March Bible study here.

Don’t Waste Your Life (studying for 10ish weeks in our seniors/college students Bible study; I’m nine chapters in)

What have you all been reading?

Gratitude

March 29, 2011 by Aliesha

I’ve been enjoying reading a book by Nancy Leigh DeMoss called Choosing Gratitude.  It’s awesome!  It’s definitely not a book you want to speed-read; it’s more of a “chew-on-it” kind of book.

Here are a few snippets that have stuck out to me lately:

“To put it even more simply: In every situation… prayer + thanksgiving = peace.”

“The grateful heart that springs forth in joy is not acquired in a moment; it is the fruit of a thousand choices. It is a godly habit and pattern that over time becomes a new muscle in our spiritual makeup. And though like every other sanctified character trait, it does nothing to make us more loved and accepted by God, gratitude does become a reliable measure for where our hearts are with Him.”

“Thankful people are refreshing, life-giving springs, while unthankful people pull others down with them into the stagnant pools of their selfish, demanding, unhappy ways.”

“A grateful heart will be revealed and expressed by thankful words, while an unthankful heart will manifest itself in murmuring and complaining.”

“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Psalm 34:1
just look at this glorious dogwood tree in bloom!

February Reading

March 1, 2011 by Aliesha

11 in 2011

I didn’t do as well with my February reading as with January!  Here is what I did read this month:

Things We Wish We’d Known (50 Veteran Homeschoolers Share) compiled and edited by Bill & Diana Waring
I started this in January, but I finished it the beginning of this month.  It is AWESOME!  I haven’t read a lot of books on homeschooling (terrible, I know…), but this is my favorite currently.  If you are thinking about homeschooling or are currently homeschooling, you have to read this one.  It is the equivalent of sitting down for coffee with 50 veteran homeschooling families and getting to ask them their one piece of advice to you as you homeschool.  It is a fast, easy read, but it is packed with so much truth and wisdom!

The Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson
This is a great book on ministering to your children and training them in the ways of the Lord.  Examining how Jesus trained His disciples, Clarkson lists ways in which we can emulate Jesus as we disciple and minister to our children.  This was a very helpful book.

Currently, I am reading:

Lies Women Believe and the Truth that Sets Them Free by Nancy Leigh DeMoss (re-read; studying all year in our women’s Bible study; I’m three chapters in)

Don’t Waste Your Life (studying for 10ish weeks in our seniors/college students Bible study; I’m four chapters in)

Choosing Gratitude by Nancy Leigh DeMoss (I’m about half-way through this one)

So what are you reading?
