DIY Bug Repellent

July 15, 2015 by Aliesha

all natural DIY Bug Repellent made with essential oils and safe for pregnant women | easy and fast to make | Feathers in Our Nest

I tried out a new bug repellent recently that I made using essential oils.  It worked really well at a cookout we went to this week!  It’s nice to know exactly what’s in your bug spray and that there aren’t any “questionable” ingredients!  It also only takes a minute to make.

These oils are very safe, and this blend of citronella, lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus citriodora is specially created to be safe for pregnant women and kids.  I tend to attract a lot of mosquitoes when I’m pregnant, so I was happy to see that this DIY bug repellent worked so well!  It also provides relief to existing bug bites, especially if you spray it on right when they happen.

As always, wearing more clothes (long pants, etc.) and avoiding scented perfumes and lotions can help prevent mosquito bites too!

I’ve seen bug spray recipes only call for lavender and citronella; what properties does the peppermint and eucalyptus add? Also heard peppermint isn’t ideal for nursing moms?

Hi Daisy, the peppermint EO helps repel ants and other bugs (so it’s optional if you want to make a spray specifically targeting mosquitoes). The eucalyptus citriodora is a powerful insect repellent against mosquitoes and gnats. I’ve never had a problem using peppermint EO in moderation while nursing, but if you’re concerned you can definitely avoid it! Hope this helps!

Do you have to use a glass bottle or can you use a plastic one? I know with citrus EO you typically have to use glass because it breaks down plastic, but didn’t know if these listed would do the same. Thanks!

I typically use glass bottles for essential oil blends like this. You could try a plastic bottle if you won’t be storing the bug repellent in it for an extended period of time!
