The Same Each Day

January 9, 2015 by Aliesha

same-breakfast-each-day

I do a lot of things to keep things simple around here (believe me, just to keep things running at all I have to let go of a lot of expectations!), and here’s one of them.

We eat the same breakfast each day.  Oatmeal and scrambled eggs… every day.

When so many other moms are carefully planning muffin Monday, pancake Tuesday, etc., why do I choose to make the same food each day?

1) There’s no complaining about the food.  One of my children doesn’t like change or unexpected happenings, so she thrives on predictability.  I know we’ll never have the discussion, “Why aren’t we having ____ today instead?” since she knows to expect oatmeal and eggs every day.

2) It’s healthy.  Not much fills up your tummy like oatmeal!  It’s so hearty and warm, especially on cold mornings. Eggs are so healthy too, especially for little ones who are growing so much!

3) It’s frugal.  We would go through cereal like crazy if we ate that every morning, and many other breakfast options would be much pricier too.  Oatmeal and eggs are some of the most affordable (nutritious) foods out there!

4) I don’t have to think about it.  Menu planning just one meal a day is exhausting to me. Figuring out what to make for lunch each day can be stressful at times. Breakfast is my “freebie.”  I don’t have to think about it one bit… I’m just on auto-pilot!

5) Everyone loves it!  The kids love oatmeal and eggs, and I do too.  Lately I’ve been eating fried eggs before they get up, but I have a small scoop of oatmeal with them too.

Like I said… no complaints here!

*Oh, and in the spring and summer, we add some seasonal fruit as well (strawberries, blueberries, etc.).  In the fall and winter, we eat fruit (apples, grapes, clementines) as a morning snack!

Yum! I just had a big bowl of oatmeal this morning 🙂 I am so bad about breakfast. I never really plan it out (except if I make a quiche or muffins ahead of time) so I’m often scrambling in the morning. My kids love the french toast sticks from aldi (totally unhealthy and I need to break them of the addiction) so they are often having that because they take 1 minute to microwave. Oops! We do scrambled eggs with a sprinkle of cheese and some salsa and/or avocado often as well!

WE do a lot of oatmeal, too. I have started scarfing eggs, cheese, salsa in a tortilla for breakfast, too. I need a lot of protein while nursing. Great post, Aliesha!

I love the idea of throwing those eggs in a tortilla!

Love the idea!!! I’m working on making a list of just 5 different “meals” for lunch and just planning to serve them at least once each week…. only have to think of what to eat when I plan it. And then do a meal plan for dinners… thankfully my kids just serve themselves in the morning:)

We have oatmeal almost everyday, also! I wish my baby girl would eat eggs. I totally agree that breakfast is the freebie meal.

We eat eggs almost every morning too. My husband eats an egg sandwich with cheese, I usually eat 3 fried eggs and coffee (I’m pregnant), and my kids each eat scrambled eggs with either juice or milk. They like ketchup on their’s. I want to start eating oatmeal every other morning though. I don’t like it very much, but I do like a version I make with adding a mashed pre-baked sweet potato, a teaspoon coconut oil, and some cinammon and a little salt, and mash it all up and maybe add a little milk. My daughter might like oatmeal too. I’ve never given her any.

Your version of oatmeal sounds delish!

I also eat the same thing for breakfast every day! It has helped a lot and I actually notice a difference in how I feel when I change things up. I should think about extending this practice to my children and see how it goes.
