Culinary Bucket List

May 31, 2011 by Aliesha

Do you have a list of things you want to accomplish before you die?  I do… sort of!  These are things I want to learn how to do in the kitchen!  I really enjoy cooking for my family, and I love learning how to make new things and experiment with different techniques.  It’s not so much about specific recipes as it is about acquiring new skills.

I started this list a while ago, and as you can see, I have crossed a few things off.

Make fortune cookies
Make yogurt
Learn how to use a chef’s knife like the pros on TV do
Make marshmallows
Learn to cook salmon
Make hummus
Make a pie crust from scratch
Organize spice cabinet
Roast garlic
Make ice cream without an icecream maker
Learn how to make perfect hard boiled eggs
Make granola bars
Make Artisan bread
Make biscotti
Make bagels
Make babyfood
Learn how to make a consistently successful omelet
Make an authentic Caesar salad
Make really good chicken stock
Decorate a cake with fondant
Take a cake decorating class
Make real vanilla extract
Make truffles
Make applesauce
Learn how to can
Make croissants
Make crackers (I did this once but they weren’t great, so I’m going to try again)
Make graham crackers
Buy a candy thermometer
Buy an instant-read thermometer
Make mozzarella cheese
Learn to use a charcoal grill
Make pasta without a machine
Make fried rice
Make an incredible, to-die-for chocolate cheesecake
Try cooking spaghetti squash
Make pita bread
Make authentic gyros with lamb, tzatziki sauce, and homemade pitas
Make mousse
Make hamburger buns
Make some sort of braided bread
Learn to make an excellent white sauce/bechamel
Make alfredo sauce
Make a sourdough starter
Learn how to make good sourdough breads

Of course I will keep adding to this list!

What’s on your culinary bucket list?

Okay, so I saw you wanted to cook a great omelete. This is the way I do it, and they turn out very well (I’m really picky, too). Spray your griddle in a circular motion- this helps to keep the egg within that circle and not keep “growing”. Then, slowly pour the egg onto the spray. Let it set up just a bit and add your ingredients (green peppers, ham, onion, etc.)- minus the cheese. Let that cook until you can flip it successfully. Once flipped, add the cheese to that side (let melt) and fold the omelete (I do a tri-fold instead of a double-fold). Then flip a couple of times to ensure that it is fully cooked. Enjoy!

ps. the first turns out the worst, then the next ones are better. 🙂 good luck!

another fyi… pour the egg onto the griddle in a slow circle, starting with the outside first. then when you pour the inside, the outer circle of egg is solidified enough that it helps hold the shape as well. i’m sure this makes no sense to you- just fly to my home and i will show you. 🙂 okay, i’m really done now.

I love your list! It looks like you are working on it pretty steadily. You might have to make another one to keep you going until you die! I have made marshmallows a couple times (my grandmother used to make them) and homemade marshmallows are THE BEST! I crave them at times. I have also made crackers numerous times that I think are super, super good. My mom used to make them all the time when we were growing up (she didn’t buy crackers very much). If you want recipes for either of these, I’d be happy to share.
    Have fun in the kitchen!

BTW Weelicious has a great graham crackers recipe that I have made a couple times with my daughter and they are delicious and use good ingredients.

@NicolemikoI LOVE these rolls here: http://joyinmykitchen.blogspot.com/2010/05/100-whole-wheat-rolls.html I made them once, and now I never want to buy hamburger buns again! They are truly SO easy and I think they will probably freeze well. Thanks for the tip on the graham crackers!

Ooh, fortune cookies is a good one – I’d never even considered *making* them. Definitely going on my list! You know, I might make ticking items off my culinary-to-trys a summer project …
