Children’s Sleep Aid

January 16, 2015 by Aliesha

Roman Chamomile Sleep Aid

Our Cordelia has been having trouble falling asleep for more than a month (maybe longer than that).  For two hours (most nights) after we put her to bed, she would be up and down, out of bed, playing in the living room, looking for a snack in the kitchen, etc.  Pretty much anything but falling asleep!  We had tried using lavender to help her sleep, but it just wasn’t working for her.  (It works for me and Vera, though!)  She was also waking up between 5:30 and 6:00AM, which was ridiculous.  I finally took the plunge and ordered a 5ml bottle of Roman Chamomile, hoping that it would work as a sleep aid.

We’ve been using it for about two weeks, and we’ve seen a HUGE improvement.  Cordelia is now falling asleep at her normal bedtime without a fight, and she’s sleeping until closer to 7:00AM.  This is awesome!  CC sleeping better is worth every penny I spent on this oil (and I’m not just saying that… I mean it)!

Here’s how to dilute it for this use.

For a 2% dilution, put 4 drops of Roman Chamomile in a 10ml roller bottle.  Add fractionated coconut oil to fill the bottle, but you could use another carrier oil such as jojoba oil or even olive oil.  We rub it on her chest and feet right before bedtime.  (You’ll want to use the dilution rate you are most comfortable with for your child – here’s a great chart.)

If you have children, Roman Chamomile is one essential oil you will definitely want to have in your stash.  Here are some of the other benefits:

  • helps with teething pain (we used it with Jude when he was cutting his most recent molar)
  • relieves allergy symptoms
  • can help sooth eczema and insect bites
  • is used to treat ear aches in babies
  • soothes inflammation and puffinessRoman-Chamomile-Sleep-Aid-2

Roman Chamomile is one of the safest essential oils, and you can use it with very young babies (as young as three months)!  It has a very “flowery” smell, similar to how chamomile tea smells.

If you’re concerned about the cost, after diluting to 2%, one 5ml bottle of this oil will fill 25 bottles (10ml), which is a LOT!

I hope if you (or your child) has trouble sleeping, you’ll give Roman Chamomile a try!

I haven’t heard of this oil, but it sounds like one I need to add to my stash!
One thing I have been leery of when using oils for sleep is that we will get “addicted” to them–in the sense that it will be hard to fall asleep without them. I have no reason to believe that’s true, except just that it seems like that’s what would happen–do you know if that is the case?

I don’t know if there’s any evidence of that happening, but if you’re concerned I would alternate different oils (week of lavender; week of chamomile; etc.).

I used this just last night on my 5 year old granddaughter. her mother said she has been doing the same thing all week, up and about instead of going to bed like she usually does. Not sleeping through the night…
I only used three drops in a 1/2 ounce and she was snoring in ten minutes, and slept until 8b this am. (1% dilution) A little goes a long way with these oils!

That is so wonderful that it helped your granddaughter! So happy to hear that!
