Charleston Trip Part 2

October 27, 2014 by Aliesha

In case you missed part 1 of our Charleston trip, you can read about it before you read this one!

Saturday was another full day as well!  We wore comfortable shoes and planned to (once again) be in the city all day!

Our first stop was Glazed, a local gourmet doughnut shop.

The long line made us feel like we’d made a good choice!  They often sell out by 10 or 10:30, so it’s important to get there early.

They have lots of unique flavors in addition to your standard fare.

Their “signature” doughnut is called the purple goat.  It has a berry goat cheese filling with a lavender glaze.

Tad got the maple bacon (naturally), and I had to try the purple goat!

Both were delicious.  Seriously.

We walked to the farmer’s market at Marion Square and were totally impressed with the abundance of produce, vendors, and food!

Every single booth was thoughtfully set up and had beautifully designed branding.

This was a fun little pecan booth that let you sample the various types!

After the farmer’s market, we decided to walk down King again and head towards the gateway walk.

The gateway walk starts at St. John’s Lutheran Church and meanders through several cemeteries, gardens, and church grounds.

This was the gate and door at St. John’s.

This is the Unitarian Church.  We were able to go inside and see the lovely interior architecture.

Walking through the cemetery was interesting.  We saw this giant “monument” to “Our Pastor.”

The garden was completely overgrown because the Unitarian Church believes in allowing nature to reassert itself.

So many beautiful gates!

We didn’t do the whole gateway walk because we were starting to get hungry.  As we walked back to our car, we saw my favorite window box of the trip!

Beautiful succulents!

For lunch, we drove to Taco Boy!

It was hopping, so we knew we’d made another good choice!

The inside was so cool, with string lights, fun light fixtures, and an industrial feel.

We had a hard time deciding on what kinds of tacos to get, since there were so many delicious options!

Tad ordered a sauteed shrimp taco with cabbage, salsa, and yogurt sauce, as well as a fried chicken taco with jalepeno cilantro mayonnaise and chipotle bbq sauce.

I ordered a kimchi beef taco with Korean bbq sauce, flank steak, and kimchi, as well as a tempura shrimp taco with cabbage, cilantro, and nuevo remoulade. Needless to say, the tacos were phenomenal!!

After lunch we went to Black Tap Coffee for some cold brew coffee.

The shop was very cute and even had a little lending library.

Loved this Charleston map!

I don’t have pictures of our afternoon, because we decided to go to Goodwill!  It was fun to shop at a different Goodwill in a very nice area.  I found a couple tops.  We also went to a HUGE Dollar Tree!

We changed for dinner, then drove to the restaurant!

For our dinner Saturday night, we chose Slightly North of Broad, or S.N.O.B.  The restaurant had probably the best atmosphere and decor of any of the places we visited all weekend, and also the BEST food!

To start, we had bread and cornbread and Carolina quail with braised greens, cornbread stuffing, and muscadine glaze.

Tad ordered the roasted lamb rack with green beans, pearl onions, sweet pepper relish, and rosemary reduction.  He was in heaven!

I ordered the pan seared duck breast with savory blue cheese bread pudding, fig jam, Brussels sprouts, and a honey-thyme reduction.  It was probably the best meal I’ve ever eaten!

For dessert we got a slice of triple chocolate cheesecake with sea salt and strawberries!  It was a stellar end to a perfect meal.

We would definitely, definitely eat at S.N.O.B. again!

Before we went back to our hotel, we stopped by Cracker Barrel.  Tad challenged me to a game of checkers and I agreed, but then we both realized we had forgotten some of the rules!  Tad looked up the rules on his phone and we played a game (I won).

And that was our second full day!  We walked over 10 miles that day as well!

One more part… coming soon!
